Shelly Meister is building her career one step at a time and PCC has been with her for the entire journey.

Since first getting her nurse aide certification from PCC in 2007, Meister has returned to get her basic and intermediate Emergency Medical Technician certifications. Now she’s reaching another rung on her career ladder by completing PCC’s paramedic program

Meister’s mother was a veterinary technician so she grew up around a vet clinic and initially planned to go into that field. She changed her mind after visiting her grandfather while he spent extended time in the hospital. “I decided I wanted to be part of that care and that miracle of helping families and patients,” she said.

Becoming a nurse aide got her in the door. Becoming an EMT allowed her to work in the ER and eventually for a critical care ambulance company. She now splits her time between working for Flight for Life in Pueblo and Spanish Peaks Ambulance in Walsenburg.

I like to be that person who’s there in your hour of need. I want to be there to be the safe in all the chaos and say ‘I’ve got you.’

PCC’s programs and instructors made it easy to keep coming back to further her education and career, she said.

“If you put in the effort, your instructors will put in just as much,” said Meister. “And if you’ve made it through Dr. (Michele) Sweeney’s classes, you’ve got some smarts behind you. You earn it.”
