    What is Health Information Technology?

    Health Information Technology (HIT) is the combination study of healthcare and information technology. HIT professional duties span planning, implementing, managing, and training on electronic health records, for purposes of:

    • Abstracting electronic health records for clinical support and reimbursement.

    • Creating needed reports (dashboards, ongoing public health concern mandates, management/operations data, etc.) from the electronic health record.

    • Protecting the computer systems/networks that support the electronic health record and facilitates patient safety, helps to decrease healthcare costs, and provides access for patients.

    Employing the latest resources, the PCC HIT program develops the knowledge, skills, and practical experience that employers value.  When pursuing degrees and certificates in Health Information Management (HIM) and Technology (HIT), students complete guided studies from the disciplines of medicine, management, finance, information technology, and law, opening new opportunities to choose from a variety of jobs across many different healthcare settings.
