HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SUMMER!
The end of the school year is almost over and summer vacation will soon be here. That doesn’t mean that you should spend the entire summer staying up late and sleeping in. The summer is a good time to build your college and scholarship resume so that when it comes time to apply to colleges and for scholarships you’ll have something to write about. Here’s a list of some of the things you can do to make the most out of your summer break:
-
READ: Improve your reading and comprehension and broaden your background by reading newspapers, magazines and books.
-
VOLUNTEER: Many of you can’t find the time during the academic year to volunteer so summer’s a great time to do that. You can try to volunteer in a profession that you may be interested in or somewhere that just seems fun! You can volunteer at a local hospital, nursing home, zoo or the homeless shelter for example.
-
COMMUNITY SERVICE - College and scholarship applications want to know what you’ve done to give back to the community. You can get involved with the YMCA summer camp program, meals on wheels, graffiti clean-up etc. (Community service and volunteering can be similar.)
-
WORK: It may be a good time to earn some money while you don’t have to worry about getting homework done and maintaining good grades. There are many skills that can be learned by having a summer job such as timeliness, working with others, discipline, and a good work ethic.
-
SUMMER PROGRAM: Apply to the Upward Bound summer program or any other summer program. This gives you the opportunity to show commitment to your education as well as develop friendships and simply have fun! Many times you get rewarded with a trip, laptop computer or scholarship for example.
This is just a few ideas. The important thing to remember is to use your time wisely and expand, develop, learn, earn, give back and have fun!!
