| Academic Advising is provided to all students who have not declared a course of study or who are uncertain of their degree or certificate goals.
For those undecided about their futures, the career development program is designed to assist them in exploring different courses of study and career options. We offer individual career counseling, small group workshops and a career development course in career/life planning. These services are designed to assist students in developing greater self-awareness through self-assessment, identifying and evaluating opportunities, and in exploring career styles and trends. The Resource Library and DISCOVER, our computerized career information resource, provide valuable information to enhance the decision making process.
Individual appointments can be made with the career counselor. During the appointment the counselor and student will develop a plan to pursue the student's career goals. This may include career assessment and linking with appropriate resources in the Resource Library, college, and community. Any student needing assistance should contact the Counseling, Career, & Transfer Services at (719)549-3040 or come by CC room 258 Monday-Friday 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and make an appointment. |

Checklist for Selecting a Course of Study |
|
|
Our First Suggestion to You is: Be Patient! Realize right now that deciding your course of study could take a couple of semesters to do - if you have a hard time being patient - remember this: If you get in a hurry and make the wrong decision you have your whole life to remember the mistake and no one to blame but yourself! Be Patient!
First: Get started in School! Yes YOU CAN select classes without knowing your course of study...
- Complete and submit the PCC Application for Admission.
- Take the PCC Basic Skills Assessment (click here for more information about the Basic Skills Assessment).
- After taking the assessment make an appointment with an undecided student advisor.
a. Review the results of your Basic Skills Assessment with the advisor. b. Select your first semester's courses (based upon the assessment). c. Make sure you do not overload yourself with too many classes your first semester of school.
- Follow through on ALL the instructions your advisor gives to you.
NEXT: Taking your time selecting a course of study!
- Pick up a Pueblo Community College catalog (ask your advisor for one). Find the list of our courses of study on the Degrees and Certificate page on our PCC website and cross off the areas you are definitely not interested in.
- Do not cross off the titles of programs you do not recognize.
- Look over the names of the degrees you have not crossed off. Read about their descriptions and course offerings in the College Catalog on the Degrees and Certificate page on our PCC website.
- After reading and reviewing these courses of study, cross off those you are now disinterested in or do not believe you have the abilities or aptitudes. Leave on your list those programs you still do not know enough about or think sound interesting and that you think you might have abilities in.
- Return to the Undecided Student Advisor to go over your new list. At this point s/he will go over your PCC courses of study and give you the referral information you need to contact and interview the department offices of each program still remaining on you list.
- Interview the departmental staff or faculty about the course(s) they offer.
- Ask the faculty advisor from each department about the pre-requisites courses you need to take to before you actually start the program.
- Many times courses needed for one degree will be the same courses needed for another degree - see which ones over lap (this will allow you to select classes that help continue to take your time in selecting your course of study).
STILL IN DOUBT?
- Are you remembering to be patient? If your undecided student advisor has not yet suggested this... ask them if you can to take a career assessment.
- Taking a career assessment consists of at least four things:
- Orientation to the assessment and information on what a career assessment is all about.
- Taking the assessment (the easy part).
- Reviewing and interpreting the results of the assessment with the advisor.
- Researching the identified fields of study with the advisor, reference books, internet sources and interviewing persons working or studying in the identified fields.
- YOU ARE NOT DONE! Continue to meet with your Undecided Student Advisor making sure to schedule classes according to the most flexible course selections possible.
- Choose Your Course of Study! Once you have decided upon your course of study, your Undecided Student Advisor will refer you to a Pueblo Community College faculty advisor for services for the remainder of your PCC educational career.
- To select your course of study you will need to:
- Meet with your undecided student Academic Advisor to verify the degree selection.
- During your meeting with your advisor complete the "Change Course of Study" form and submit it to the Admissions and Records office.
