Mediation

What is mediation?

Sometimes people need assistance in resolving conflicts. Those involved want to end the conflict, but they may be angry or hurt, which keeps them from being able to discuss their disagreements and reach a resolution. Mediation is where a trained counselor works with the individuals to reach a resolution of the conflict.

Who serves as a mediator at PCC?

PCC has a number of trained counselors who provide mediation services. These counselors have a Master’s degree in counseling and have experience in dealing with conflict resolution.

How can a student request mediation?

The student will need to contact the Office of Student Judicial Affairs and request mediation. The student will need to briefly describe to the Student Judicial Affairs Officer the issue/conflict for which mediation is being requested, then the Student Judicial Affairs Officer will suggest the names of counselors who could serve as mediators.

Are students ever required to attend mediation?

Students are not required to take part in mediation. There are times, however, when a student or students are accused of violating the PCC Student Code of Conduct, but the real issue is a conflict between two or more students. These issues can be referred for mediation instead of formal disciplinary proceedings. If the students refuse to attend mediation in lieu of disciplinary proceedings, then the students will take part in formal disciplinary proceedings.

Will the college keep a record of the mediation?

PCC will make and keep a record of the mediation session, and the record will be kept with the confidential counseling records. (Discipline records are kept by the Vice President for Student Services.)

Will mediation records be a part of a student’s discipline file?

Discipline records are only kept if a student is accused of violating the PCC Student Code of Conduct or a college rule or policy. If a student is referred for mediation (see above), then the discipline record will note that the matter was referred for mediation. No record of the mediation session(s) will be kept in a discipline file.

If a student requests mediation with no disciplinary issue involved, there will be no discipline record of the request.

How can a student request mediation?

Students wishing to request mediation can contact the Counseling and Career Services Office (549-3030, AB-154). All requests will remain confidential unless the situation involves a violation of the Student Code of Conduct or other actions that a counselor must report.
