Beginning Students (0-15 Credit Hours)
- Make an appointment with a career counselor to start your career planning.
- Take either FOCUS 2 or Type Focus career assessment to discover your interests, strengths, skills, personality and values.
- Attend a career or life skills workshop sponsored by Career Services
- Checkout books or use the software in the Career Services Library to assist in your career planning.
- Begin to acquire networking skills.
- Become an active participant in campus activities in order to expand leadership skills.
- Meet with an advisor to plan your college pathway and course selections.
- Begin to consider transfer to a four year college and start your investigation in the Career Services Library.
- Receive assistance with employment at Career Services.
- Learn about financial aid, scholarships, and money management.
- Obtain a professional email address.
Phase 2: Explore Options: Where am I going?
Intermediate I Students (16-30 Hours)
- Make an appointment with a career counselor to start your career planning.
- Take either FOCUS 2 or Type Focus career assessment to discover your interests, strengths, skills, personality and values.
- Investigate career planning and exploration resources in the Career Services Library.
- Perform informational interviews with employers who appeal to you.
- Find someone to shadow at their job.
- Attend on campus transfer fairs.
- Attend career and job fairs to explore options related to your interests.
- Volunteer for a college or community event or project.
- Start to develop a portfolio.
- Create a resume.
- Continue to improve networking skills.
- Join a professional organization.
- Research internship opportunities.
- Talk to a professor about a career in their field.
Phase 3: Set Career Goals: How do I connect to work?
Intermediate II Students (31-45 Hours)
- Continue to research jobs and employers at the Career Services Library.
- Attend “lunch & learn” workshops sponsored by the Career Services.
- Establish short and long term career goals.
- Attend workshops on job hunting skills.
- Improve networking skills by meeting with employers recruiting on campus.
- Attend the on campus transfer fair.
- Gather company research at job and career fairs.
- Research colleges for transfer at the Career Services Library.
- Apply for transfer, financial aid & scholarships at potential colleges and universities.
- Make an appointment at Student Employment Services for a resume review.
- Expand your portfolio.
- Continue to meet with mentor.
- Finalize your semester plans and transfer plans with your advisor.
Phase 4: Market Yourself: How do I promote myself?
Advanced Students (46+ Hours)
- Meet with a career counselor to plan your job search.
- Seek out references.
- Continue to add experience through internships, volunteer events and extracurricular activities.
- Revise your resume; add internships and leadership activities.
- Practice your interviewing skills with a mock interview or by using the software in the Career Services Library.
- Attend etiquette dinner.
- Meet with an advisor to complete degree planning sheet.
