  • Fremont Campus unveils lab renovations

The PCC Fremont Campus is celebrating the renovation of its nursing and biology labs.

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Feb. 11 to show the remodeled spaces to the community and to thank longtime PCC supporter and Canon City resident Walt Schepp, whose generosity made the project possible.

Construction began in late November and was completed in about two months. Two classrooms were turned into one large nursing lab, allowing all nursing students to attend at the same time. Previously, morning and afternoon labs were required due to the limited capacity of the smaller classrooms.

The renovation also included new lighting, storage rooms and equipment such as hospital beds, simulation mannequins and biology lab materials.

In all, the project cost $1.2 million and includes the salaries for a full-time biology instructor and full-time simulation lab coordinator for two years.

Schepp said he and his late wife, Gloria, always focused their philanthropic efforts on organizations “that were working real hard to help themselves.” He urged PCC students to pay it forward by helping those who have helped them, just as community college offered the Schepps the opportunity to pursue a college degree.

Student Dominic Hernandez pledged that Schepp’s generosity will indeed lead to greater things for the students and their future patients.

“I promise we will use this cutting-edge facility to become the best nurses we can be – and we have you to thank for that,” said Hernandez.
