    Bayfield Ribbon Cutting

Officials from Pueblo Community College and the Bayfield School District held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 24 for PCC’s new Bayfield site.

In front of an enthusiastic crowd, PCC President Patty Erjavec, Southwest Campus Executive Dean Sam Dosumu and Bayfield School District Superintendent Kevin Aten spoke briefly before opening the doors for community members to tour the building.

“We’re so proud of this partnership and all of the work that has been done to bring us to this point,” Erjavec said. “This is what it’s all about – being able to meet the needs of the community and offer students access to a high-quality, affordable college education no matter where they live.”

PCC and the school district signed a memorandum of understanding in March for PCC to offer general education courses for high school students and the community. The site is at the former Bayfield Primary School.

“Just a few short months ago, this building was sitting empty ... and now every room serves a purpose. We are building a community and the cornerstone is PCC," said Aten.

PCC offers guarantee-transfer general education classes that lead to pathways in education, psychology and social sciences. Courses include math, English, psychology, science and humanities. Erjavec announced that plans already are underway to add a Certified Nurse Aide program.

Through the partnership, Bayfield High School students are able to take concurrent enrollment classes that help them earn transferrable college credits and even graduate with an associate degree at the same time they graduate high school, saving them thousands of dollars in tuition costs.
