The Alternative High School Diploma Program is a collaborative community effort between local school districts and South-Central Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). It provides a self-paced and competency-based alternative through which high school dropouts between the ages of 18 and 21 can earn a diploma as well as college credit for technology-based classes. The PCC Alternative High School Diploma Program is designed for individuals who are self-motivated and committed to earning an alternative high school diploma. This one-year program is offered through the Community Education and Training Department. While enrolled in the program, students are connected with the campus, encouraged to seek higher educational opportunities and offered support and access to PCC’s admissions and financial aid services.

Eligibility |
The PCC Alternative High School Diploma Program is open to students between the ages of 18 and 21. Students over the age of 21 may enroll and are required to pay tuition and fees on a scheduled basis.

Students interested in the PCC Alternative High School Diploma Program must apply through their respective school district for referral to the program.

After referral, potential enrollees meet with the PCC Alternative High School Diploma Program to begin the interview process. The potential enrollee is then scheduled to attend classes.

Curriculum
|
The PCC Alternative High School Diploma Program is a competency-based program in WorkKeys® job-related work skills topics. The components include:
1. WorkKeys® assessments in 9 topic areas
2. Project development in 4 topic areas
3. Course work in 4 topic areas
4. Final Presentation of Learning
Students who successfully complete all the components will receive a diploma issued by their sponsoring school district. In addition, students will also receive a Workforce Skills Certificate identifying their level of proficiencies in Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information, and Locating Information. This certificate is sanctioned by the local Workforce Center and is recognized by employers.

Instruction
|
The core curriculum to prepare for the WorkKeys® assessments is Worldwide Interactive Network (WIN®) Courseware. WIN® is a self-directed, on-line computer based program. Individuals must be self-motivated, focused and committed to 35-40 hours per week for success in this program. Facilitators are available as needed.

As part of Project Development, students complete detailed assignments in each of the following categories:

The program also requires coursework in the following topic areas:

Career planning is given special emphasis and all students must complete a resume, college financial aid information and college admission forms for successful completion of the component.

Presentation of Learning
|
A final capstone to the program is a Presentation of Learning (POL). The potential graduate prepares an electronic portfolio based on their learning experience and personal growth. The POL is demonstrated before a board of educators, and community business leaders.
