The following timeline is suggested activities and discussions to aid the mentoree. During the mentoring process “customize” each mentorees’ needs to the individual because not all activities will be used, in fact, it may be necessary to add new items of concern. Some of the suggested activities may have already been reviewed by the mentorees’ Department Chair and will not be necessary to repeat or the mentoree may have ample teaching experience, thus making the mentoring process successful by just being a “good listener” and supporting “coach”.
During the mentorship seven activities must be completed
- Initial visits to assess the needs and responsibilities of the mentoree. Set a regular meeting time.
- Observation of mentor by mentoree.
- Observation of mentoree by mentor. (Video taping – refer to PCC Employee Standards year one)
- Observation of “master teacher” by mentoree, this should by an instructor in another discipline, (i.e. PTA beginning instructor observe an instructor in Science- A&P, Biology, or Chemistry.)
- Complete and document 20 to 40 total hours of mentorship during two semesters. After the initial 10 hours, the mentoring committee will determine the required amount of time based upon recommendations of mentor, mentoree and immediate supervisor.
- Mentor must document time spent with mentoree. Turn in time tracking forms to the mentoring committee at the end of each semester. Pay for the mentor will be based upon the documented contact hours.
- Attend mentoring committee meeting at least once each semester to discuss progress and needs assessment of mentoring. Mentoring committee will notify all mentors of times.
The activities listed below will vary depending on the semester the mentoring process started. Please use these activities as suggested activities and items of discussion to work into the timeline
First semester mentoring:
- Initial visit with mentoree: In assessing mentoree needs, prioritize what is needed to comply with the job duties the mentoree was hired to do. How experienced the mentoree is coming into the position can be a good start to this list. (Responsibilities of the level of hire and if in a specific vocational program, credentialing needs, TIP program, syllabi, lesson plans, assessment plans, grade sheets, etc.)
- Tour of PCC campus with introduction to specific facilities such as, Learning Resources Center, Learning Center, Print Shop, and College Center.
- Schedule videotaping and observation times for mentoree, mentor, and master teacher.
- Committee Service: Explain the current faculty committees and requirement to serve on one. (Mentoree should be aware of time involvement to committee they may serve on so that it does not take away from fulfilling their current job duties.)
- Discuss Student and Department Chair evaluations, due dates, location of forms. If the mentoree is hired on at the level of Department Chair, explanation of ordering forms must be reviewed.
- Set up meeting with the department administrative assistant that can service mentoree so services available to them can be explained.
- Set up contact with Frank Smith to develop plan in CTE.
- Review and discuss college catalog for student standards of conduct, academic regulations and any other college protocol.
- Introduce mentoree to as many faculty and staff as possible and make them feel comfortable! Let them know if you can’t help them with a specific item, you’ll connect them with someone who can!
- If mentoree is responsible for advising students, review requirements and schedule time for mentoree to observe several students being advised.
- Schedule training time with Computer Services staff and mentoree.
- Review “Assessment of Student Learning” process.
- Go to lunch or schedule breaks together.
- ENCOURAGE, ENCOURAGE AND ENCOURAGE!
- Discuss teaching strategies, student assessment, classroom management, student behaviors, time management, organizational skill, and STRESS reduction.
- Schedule faculty development workshops together.
- Keep track and document mentor time only.
- Discuss student issues that may develop and refer mentoree to someone who can help him or her if out of your area of expertise.
- Suggest mentoree keep a journal or profile of goals met.
- Review Employee Standards, (the 3-yr probationary requirements of employee – year one). Schedule mentoree's first videotaping session by mid semester. Mentoree should review first, followed by discussion session with mentor.
- Student activities: review and discuss events that occur at PCC, ex. Student Senate events and specific program student organization events.
- As a mentor attend scheduled meetings with mentoring committee for progress reports, mentor support and mentoree issues.
- Celebrate the first semester mentoring process.
Second semester activities and discussion items will encompass many of the same suggested activities of the previous semester. If mentor and mentoree have reviewed the calendar of events for PCC and prioritized the goals and responsibilities, second semester will flow into a successful ending
Second semester mentoring
- Review goals, prioritize and set a schedule for assigned meeting times.
- Discuss student issues.
- Lesson plans, syllabi, and course schedule if needed.
- Discuss calendar of events for college activities, student activities-Spring fling, and student organization events.
- Schedule observation of mentor, mentoree and master teacher.
- Videotape second observation. Mentoree to review and evaluate, followed by discussion with mentor.
- Support and encourage ----------- listen!
- Discuss teaching strategies, student assessment, and assessment tools/methods, assessment planning, core competencies of the college and specific department competencies.
- Schedule and attend CTE sessions together.
- Discuss student advisement, graduation planning sheets and scheduling issues.
- Keep track of mentor time only. Turn in tracking forms to mentoring committee.
- Attend scheduled meetings with mentors and mentoring committee for progress reports, problem solving or new issues.
- Complete an evaluation of the mentoring process and submit it to the mentoring committee.
- Attend graduation commencement together and celebrate students’ successes.
- Celebrate the accomplishments of the year.
