Adjunct Mentor Guidelines and Activities

Suggested activities and discussion items are as follows and should be prioritized as needed for mentee’s teaching experience.

  • Initial conference with mentee to review teaching responsibilities before semester start or within first two weeks of semester.
  • Discuss issues of program curriculum, lesson plans, student assessment, and classroom environment.
  • Schedule tour of campus and facility resources available.
  • Schedule meeting with area administrative assistant in mentee’s division or department. (Adjunct faculty should know what services are provided to prepare for classes).
  • Review computer services available to both faculty and students.
  • Review how equipment works and/or where to locate equipment for instruction, i.e. Smart Board CTE at 549-3418.
  • Discuss time management and scheduling issues.
  • Review academic and college events calendar.
  • Discuss student issues: discipline, classroom management, attendance policies, integrity, etc.
  • Plan informal get together for discussions, i.e. lunch, dinner, coffee.
  • Schedule observation of mentor and master teacher.
  • Discuss teaching strategies, assessment tools/methods, assessment planning, core competencies and department competencies.
  • Discuss how to encourage and motivate students.
  • Celebrate accomplishments!
