Adjunct Mentor Guidelines and Activities
Suggested activities and discussion items are as follows and should be prioritized as needed for mentee’s teaching experience.
- Initial conference with mentee to review teaching responsibilities before semester start or within first two weeks of semester.
- Discuss issues of program curriculum, lesson plans, student assessment, and classroom environment.
- Schedule tour of campus and facility resources available.
- Schedule meeting with area administrative assistant in mentee’s division or department. (Adjunct faculty should know what services are provided to prepare for classes).
- Review computer services available to both faculty and students.
- Review how equipment works and/or where to locate equipment for instruction, i.e. Smart Board CTE at 549-3418.
- Discuss time management and scheduling issues.
- Review academic and college events calendar.
- Discuss student issues: discipline, classroom management, attendance policies, integrity, etc.
- Plan informal get together for discussions, i.e. lunch, dinner, coffee.
- Schedule observation of mentor and master teacher.
- Discuss teaching strategies, assessment tools/methods, assessment planning, core competencies and department competencies.
- Discuss how to encourage and motivate students.
- Celebrate accomplishments!
