Turabian Style
Humanities and social science students use "Turabian" style, prepared by Kate Turabian, a dissertation secretary at the University of Chicago 1930-1958. She died in 1987 at age 94, soon after the 50th anniversary of the original publication of her book A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. This tip sheet highlights Turabian style, which is located in Reference at LB2369 .T929 M2

                Highlights of Turabian style:

  • source titles are italicized (not underlined like MLA); articles are in straight Roman type
  • two styles of capitalization: "headline" style (major words) or "sentence" style (proper nouns).
  • all numbers (pages, chapters, volumes) are in Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3)
  • two styles of notes: bibliographic and reference-list
  • if no place of publication, display as N.p.: Bantam, 1910 (capital "N")
  • if no date of publication, display as Chicago: Harper, n.d. (small "N")

"Bibliographic" style

(Notes are indented in first line, normal left-margin on second line. Bibliographic entries are normal left-margin in first line and indented in the second line. Use 'headline style' with all primary words capitalized.)
