SuDocs Classification System
The Government Printing Office (GPO) is supervised by Congress' Joint Committee on Printing (JCP). GPO does not "control" its publications---that is the responsibility of the agency producing the document. Every GPO document has a number assigned by the Superintendent of Documents. This SuDocs number (shown below) is based on the agency publishing the document. Examples include "A" for the Department of Agriculture, "D" for Department of Defense, "LC" for Library of Congress, etc.
LC 5.2:R 13/2
Library of Congress document; before the colon is the "stem"; after the colon is the book number
A 1.10:948 Department of Agriculture
1.10 is the stem for the "Yearbook of Agriculture"
948 is the 1948 edition
A 1.10:381 original edition
381/2 first revision
381/986 1986 edition
Depository Libraries
Per the Depository Library Act of 1962, each state is allowed two depository libraries (designated by that state's Senators), plus two in each congressional district (designated by that district's Representative). Other depository libraries can be state and law libraries. Full depository libraries receive ALL government documents while selected depositories may select about 10% of the total possible titles. Full depository libraries in Colorado include Denver Public Library and CU Boulder; selected depositories include the Pueblo City-County Library District and USC. Adequate storage capability and a full-time government documents librarian are critical for depository libraries.
