q       NAICS is a unique system for classifying businesses; it is based on a single economic concept---that economic units using similar processes to produce goods or services are grouped together.  This "production-oriented" system allows statistical agencies to produce data that can be used for:
·         measuring productivity, unit labor costs, and the capital intensity of production;
·         constructing input-output relationships; and
·         estimating employment-output relationships and other such statistics that require that inputs and outputs be used together.

q       The classification standard underlying Federal economic statistics classified by industry. Covers economic activities and defines industries in accordance with the composition and structure of the economy. Although still used, it has been supplanted by the NAICS coding system.

Statistical Abstract of the United States. HA202 .S797
q       Compiled by the Bureau of the Census, this has been updated annually since 1878. It provides an extensive statistics for the U.S., with selected data for states, metropolitan areas, and cities from reports and records of government and private agencies. Issued annually, it is the government's most important statistical fact book on the social, political, and economic aspects of American life.
