For best results in taking notes…….observe.
Be familiar with the subject matter…….if the instructor is talking about Machiavelli but you don't know who, what, or where that is, how will you take decent notes?
Bring the right (write?) materials…..if you're not prepared you will not succeed.
Sit as close to the front and center of the room as possible.
Personalize the instruction----act as if the instructor is talking only to you, and you need to absorb as much as possible.
Participate in class discussions or projects; personalize the class, relate to it.
Be alert to repetition…….it may indicate emphasis on what's important and on the exam.
Take notes in outline form. Record the highlights. Use your own words. Use key words to help summarize.
Copy material off the board or screen.
Use a three-ring binder----it makes it easier to add or discard papers, and is neater when adding handouts from the instructor….keep your papers together!
Use only one side of a sheet of paper. Use 3 x 5 cards if you prefer.
Hot Review and organize your notes after class; you may have been tired or distracted in class….you may discover you don't understand everything you wrote!
Summarize & edit (you don't need everything you wrote!)
Review your notes again before class. (You'll discover that you won't have to cram for tests)
