LAW & GOVERNMENT

U. S. Law

Various sites offer full text American law and its interpretation via court cases and legislative actions. Federal law is codified in the U.S. CodeChanges to government agencies, laws, or procedures are announced in the Federal Register. Government agencies operate in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations. Laws can be interpreted in the court system, the highest of which is the U. S. Supreme Court as well as within the federal judiciary system. Federal laws are based upon Congressional legislation. If seeking those documents important to the creation of our government, search America's historical documents.

U. S. Government

For information on government agencies, use the government's own web site FirstGov or an excellent federal-agency locator.

Colorado Law

Current state law is known as the Colorado Revised Statutes, and they derive from the legislature's laws. To stay current on legislative issues, access the Capitol Reporter. Just like at the federal level, state laws are interpreted through the court system which also has provides Colorado legal forms online.

Colorado Government

Colorado's home page provides information and links to all our state's agencies, organizations, and leaders. Whether you want information on opening your own business, tourism, or personalities in government, use this site!

Pueblo & Regional Government

The Pueblo city government provides access to laws, zoning ordinances, bus schedules, local events, and numerous other links. The Pueblo County government offers similar information and links, as do the sites for El Paso County and Denver.

Other law sites

The University of Colorado at Boulder's law library is an excellent resource, as is the University of Denver's law library. A publicly-accessible web site for law cases and resources (law schools, attorney locator, etc) is FindLaw. A major publisher of consumer-friendly law materials is Nolo Press.

Using the Legal Resources in the P.C.C. Library

The PCC Library has numerous legal documents to help you. Search our online catalog here. The Colorado Law Finder (REF KFC1859 .W5) provides indexing to (a) Colorado Digest, (b) Colorado Revised Statutes Annotated, (c) Corpus Juris Secundum, (d) texts and treatises, (e) U.S. Code Annotated, and (f) 'Key Number' publications from WestLaw.

The Colorado Reporter (REF KFC1845) compiles Colorado court cases in the Pacific Reporter; we have the 2nd edition, through volume 973. If you know the citation, go directly to the case. For example "9 P2d 285" means volume #9, page 285 in the Colorado Reporter.

The Colorado Revised Statutes (REF KFC1830 .A24) is codified state law. Use the subject-keyword index to find a law. It will be something like "42-2-117". That means you find title 42, article 2, section 117.

These statutes are based upon Colorado Session Laws (REF KFC1825 .A226) and the Library's collection covers the late 19th century to the present. We also subscribe to a full-text law database called L.O.I.S. that covers federal and state laws and courts, including district, bankruptcy, and tax courts. It is available on campus via password.

Current periodicals may also provide interpretations of current issues and provide an argumentative ("pro-con") background for a research paper. Search our periodicals here. We recommend you search EBSCO Host Web's Point of View Reference Center and Academic Search Premier. You can also search our links to regional libraries and review our "tip sheets" on how to do research and locate other resources.
