Educational Music Guidelines

The music guidelines govern both printed music and sound recordings (audio disk, cassette or tape recordings). Multiple copying of printed music for classroom situations is permitted as long as it does not exceed the limitations in Permissible Uses item (2).

NOTE: No educational permission is granted for recordings which may be governed by both music and sound recording copyrights.

Medium Permissible Uses Fine Print
Printed Music and Sound Recordings Emergency copying to replace copies that are not available for an imminent performance. The photocopies must be replaced with purchased copies.
For academic purposes single or multiple copies of excerpts of works may be made. May not be used for a performance.  The excerpts must not comprise a part of the whole which would constitute a performable unit.  Performable units include a selection, movement, or aria.  In no case shall  the excerpt exceed 10% of the whole work.  The number of copies shall not exceed one copy per student.
Purchased printed copies may be edited or simplified provided that the fundamental character of the work is not distorted. When lyrics are part of the music, they may not be altered.  Lyrics may not be added if none previously existed.
A single copy of recordings of student performances may be made for evaluation or rehearsal purposes. The single copy may be retained by the College or the individual instructor.
A single copy of a copyrighted music recording (such as a tape, disc, or cassette) may be made from music recordings owned by the College or an individual instructor for the purpose of constructing aural exercises or examinations. The single copy may be retained by the College or individual instructor. This pertains to the copyright of the music and not to any copyright which might exist in the sound recording.  The College's or  individual instructor's copy must be a legal copy.
