Windows concepts:

  1. Objects on the desktop are represented by small pictures called icons.
  2. A window can be moved by dragging its title bar with the mouse.
  3. A window can be resized by dragging a corner with the mouse.
  4. Actions of the mouse:
    1. Click – press the left mouse button and immediately release it
    2. Double Click – quickly press the left mouse button twice
    3. Right Click – press the right mouse button and immediately release it; a shortcut menu appears
    4. Drag – point at an object, then hold the left mouse button down while moving the mouse to the desired location; allows “drag and drop”
    5. Right Drag -- point at an object, then hold the right mouse button down while moving the mouse to the desired location; allows “drag and drop” but also displays a shortcut menu allowing the option to copy or move the object
  5. The Windows Start menu provides access to programs, documents, etc.
  6. The Windows Task Bar contains buttons that represent all open windows, the active window, and can include Toolbars such as Quick Launch.
  7. The scroll bar down the right side or across the bottom of a window allows for the shifting of text not currently visible either horizontally or vertically on the screen.  NOTE:  If there is no scroll bar, the complete contents of the window are already visible.
  8. A folder is a tool for organizing similar files; the folder may contain other folders which are called subfolders.
  9. The term default means predetermined settings within a program (such as line spacing, tab stops, text alignment, font style and font size); many defaults can be changed by the user.
  10. Microsoft Windows is a type of software called operating system which controls all resources of the computer including hardware, programs and files.
  11. When using Save As to rename a document, it must be saved with a new filename to avoid altering the original version of the file on the disk.

Word Processing concepts:

  1. The automatic line break that occurs in a document when the cursor reaches the right margin is called word wrap.
  2. The term selecting text means dragging the mouse to highlight the text that is to be worked with.
  3. Text can be deleted by selecting it, then simply pressing the delete key.
  4. Cutting text or an object removes the selection from the document and places it on the clipboard.
  5. Copying text or an object leaves the selection in the document and places a copy of it on the clipboard.
  6. Pasting takes the text or object from the clipboard and places it in the document at the cursor’s location.
  7. Text or objects on the clipboard can be pasted repeatedly but will be replaced by the next text or object that is cut or copied.
  8. An example of a default setting in a word processing document is the text aligning with a smooth left margin and ragged right margin.
  9. The find command quickly and easily locates a particular word or phrase in a document.
  10. The replace command locates a particular word or phrase in a document and allows the user to automatically replace it with a different word or phrase.
  11. Microsoft Word automatically underlines misspelled words in red and grammatical errors in green.
  12. Word skips all instances of a particular spelling or grammar error when the user clicks Ignore All.
  13. Line spacing refers to the vertical spacing of text.
  14. Alignment refers to the horizontal spacing of text.
  15. A word processing tool such as Microsoft Word is used to type a document, make revisions and corrections to the text, adjust margins, spacing, font style, size, and color, and create columns and tables within the document.
  16. Bullets are large dots used to emphasize a particular list of items.
  17. Click File on the menu bar to locate options related to working with a file, including creating, opening, saving and printing a document.
  18.  The Standard toolbar contains tools for opening, saving, previewing and printing documents, the clipboard tools, and buttons to undo and redo entries.
  19. The Formatting toolbar contains tools to select the style, size, and color of the font, attributes such as bold, italics and underlining, text alignment, bullets and automatic numbering.
  20. Print Preview allows the user to see how the full page looks before it is printed.

Spreadsheet concepts:

  1. Columns run vertically and are represented by letters.
  2. Rows run horizontally and are represented by numbers.
  3. The intersection of a column and a row is called a cell.
  4. The active cell is the cell where the cursor is located and is identified by the dark border around it.
  5. A row, column, or cell can be removed from the spreadsheet by first selecting it, then choosing Delete from the Edit menu.
  6. To select all cells in a spreadsheet, click the Select All button located in the upper left corner where the row and column headings meet.
  7. A new row can be placed in a spreadsheet by selecting a cell in the row just below where the new row is to be located, then choosing Rows from the Insert menu.
  8. The characters +, -, *, and / are the arithmetic operators that indicate the math operation to be performed.
  9. The star (*) indicates multiplication; the slash (/) indicates division.
  10. A formula is the expression used to calculate the values within a spreadsheet and it must begin with an equal sign.

Internet concepts:

  1. A web page address is called the URL (Uniform Resource Locator).
  2. The home page is the main page that all of the other pages on a particular website are organized around and link back to.
  3. The location of a hyperlink within a web page is marked by underlined text of a different color; when the mouse is placed there, the pointer changes to a pointing hand.
  4. As you click the hyperlinks to go to new web pages, the browser stores the location of each page visited during a single session in a history list.
  5. The browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape) is the tool used to navigate the Internet.
  6. The ISP or Internet Service Provider refers to the company and its software used to connect your computer to the Internet (AOL, Juno, MSN).
  7. A search engine (Google, Dogpile, Yahoo) finds a list of hyperlinks based on the search criteria provided.
