COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This course covers maintenance, compilation, analysis, and presentation of healthcare statistics. Discussion is focused on the use, collection, presentation, and verification of health care data including fundamental concepts of descriptive statistics; data validity and reliability; data presentation techniques; and vital statistics. Students will be introduced to topics such as basic statistical principles; morbidity and mortality, commonly computed hospital rates, uniform reporting requirements, and selection and construction of data displays. This course also introduces principles of quality improvement, utilization management, and risk management in health care. Topics include the continuous quality improvement philosophy, including tools, data analysis/application, and related committee functions; utilization management and risk management; and credentialing, accreditation and regulation.

Provide understanding of organization of healthcare; administrative structure and departments, agencies public and private, corporations, and health care providers

Understand the functions of the health record and need to know criteria in the health field

Describes pre and post-discharge data processing

Investigates the safe storage, transfer and retrieval of health information

Discusses the uses of health information on a local as well as global level

Describes use, documentation, care, storage, compliance of primary and secondary health care records

Retrieval and reporting of health information; process and legal aspects

Confidentiality Health Care Data and Compliance of HIPAA in

Ethical and legal manipulation and reporting of health data

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

The final grade for this course is determined by a combination of exams, quizzes, projects, and homework.  The point value of each assignment will be given to the students by the instructor is a separate handout.

Special Remarks:

1.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist.  Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
