COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is an introduction to digital photography as a multimedia production medium and develops the skills necessary for basic camera and computer imaging operations.

COURSE GOAL:

Provide students with hands on experience into the basic concepts of digital imaging using Adobe Photoshop 7.
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Implement image manipulation software for multimedia productions. Understand the practical elements involved in digital camera use. Examining such things as camera control, media needed, using applicable technology combined with electronic media.

  (A) Understand influences the have led to development of digital photography equipment and digital imaging.
  (B) Analyze and compare digital imaging hardware and software.
  (C) Demonstrate knowledge of digital imaging process.
  (D) Understand major characteristics of the creative process in digital photography and identify which appropriate equipment will be required.
  (E) Have created digital photography portfolio emphasizing composition, nature, architecture, portrait, speed, depth of field, and photo essay.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
    Standard Grading Scale based on attendance, quizzes, tests, and digital photography portflio.

Special Remarks:

1.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist.  Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.

8. COURSE OUTLINE
  Suggested Schedule:

Intro to Digital Photography & Photoshop 7

  Week 1 History of development of digital photography and overview of camera basics and functions. Portfolio assignments given. Adobe Photoshop introduced. Assignments in photo imaging established.
  Week 2-6 Taking pictures, loading images into Photoshop, viewing image info and settings. Photoshop basics, tools, correcting images, enhancing images, objects and gradients, working with layers, masks, and channels.
  Review Test  
  Week 7-13 Creating custom masks, experimenting with channel operations, combining images to create animation, combining images with text, automating masks. Optimizing images for the web will be introduced as well as putting images online for multimedia projects.
  Week 14-15 Portfolio and images for online projects due.
  Review Test  
9. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
  To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
10. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
  The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.

Assignment One
  Nature
    This assignment should not have any or very few man-made objects in the photo.  Try to enhance the natural aspects of the photo.  If you choose to composite, make sure that the object is inserted seamlessly and is not apparent to the viewer.

Assignment Two
  Architecture
    This assignment should be of a building or unusual man made object.  Try to enhance to the viewer that the object or form has ascetic beauty and in its shape has composition.

Assignment Three
  Portraits
    This assignment should be portrait shots of your fellow classmates or other pictures that you choose.  Black and White portraits always give an emotional value to a portrait.  Pay special attention to the expressions and images that you choose to portray.  Do not include any other items in the background that distract form the personal statement you are making about the person.

Assignment Four
  Speed
    Using the operator priority function of the camera, shoot two different pictures that represent speed.  Use the shutter to capture movement and suspend movement for just a second.  Our use of the camera to blur objects and give the sensation of speed.  Please note the shutter speed for each photo on this assignment.

Assignment Five
  Depth of Field
    Using the aperture priority on the camera, produce two images that capture the magic of selective focus.  These images should attempt to show the relationship to objects in the cameras view, which might have different focus and yet have some kind of relationship.  You will need to use the aperture priority settings to achieve this.  Please not the aperture setting for each photo on this assignment.

Assignment Six
  Photo Essay
    Choose an artistic and fun topic to shoot a series of photos or layout.  Each of the photos should be presented in one 8.5 by 11 composite layout.

Assignment Seven
  Self Portrait
    This assignment should represent you...how you perceive yourself...not necessarily how you photograph, but how you see yourself represented.

Assignment Eight
  Composite
     Composite two or more photos (that you have taken) into a single finished product.  The needs to have a theme that is carried out throughout the composition.  Pay careful attention on how you composite the different elements and try to bring in elements that enhance the overall composition but do not draw attention to themselves individually.
