COURSE SYLLABUS 1. TITLE OF COURSE: Internship PREFIX/NUMBER: MGD 280 CREDIT HOURS: 3 2. PREREQUISITE: Permission of Instructor 3. RESOURCES NEEDED: TEXT: None SUPPLIES: None 4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course places the student in an industry setting and focuses on actual production experience in the fields of new media, web design, production or graphics. 5. COURSE GOAL: To provide the student with opportunity to gain work experience under the supervision of an employer. 6. COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of the course, students will (A) To demonstrate good work habits in a professional setting. (B) Appreciate the work habits and environment of new media professionals. (C) Understand more about the industry through hands on experience. (D) Bridge the gap between the classroom environment and real life. (E) To demonstrate the ability to be punctual. (F) To demonstrate the ability to follow directions and meet or exceed standards and timelines. (G) To demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with fellow employees and supervisors as a team member. (H) To demonstrate the ability to complete tasks with little or no direction and demonstrate the ability to show initiative in completing assigned and unassigned tasks. 7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES: Grade will be determined on supervisor evaluations, student journals, timesheets, resume, and thank you letter. Attendance: College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings. If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week. Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog. 2. Tardy Policy: A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies. 3. Assignments/Missed Exams: It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments. If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed. Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist. Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion. 8. COURSE OUTLINE Course outline will be determined by student and employer. 9. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Attendance: It is mandatory that you show up for your scheduled time. If you are unable to make it, please call in as much in advance as possible. You may arrange your schedule to fit your employer's work hours and your school schedule.The student will complete 135 hours on-the-job training. Excessive absences will be reflected in the student's performance evaluations. A student with excessive absences may not receive credit for the course.Journal: Students are required to journal their experiences and turn in the forms at midterm and the end of the internship.Evaluation: The instructor will provide all evaluation forms for both the employer and the student. The evaluation forms will consist of a midterm and a final journal to be completed and returned to the instructor. These evaluation forms will be an overall rating of the student's performance for the 135 hours of internship.The supervising instructor will assign a grade based on evaluations completed by the student, employment supervisor, and the instructor. These evaluations will be based on the performance objectives agreed upon in the training plan.Time Sheets: A timesheet is included in the INTERNSHIP packet. The student prepares the timesheet, and will get the supervisors signature and approval. The student will turn in the signed and completed timesheet as noted.Thank You Letter: Please include a photo copy of the thank you letter you will be sending to the employer and turn it in to the instructor along with the final journal and timesheet. Part of your final grade will be points given for sending a thank you letter.Resume: A resume will also be submitted to the instructor and included in the final paperwork submitted at the end of the internship. 10. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor. 11.
