GRAPHIC DESIGN II
DESCRIPTION
This course will focus on visual problem solving with the focus on the development of design skills being applied in commercial forms such as advertising, brochures, etc. While computers are used in productions they are only considered to enhance the design, the foundations of design principles will be enforced as the core of exceptional design. You will learn how design is utilized successfully in the work place and the market. You will work as individuals and as creative teams.
HOW WE WILL LEARN
Classes will consist of lectures, demonstrations, studio time and critiques. Peer evaluation is critical to exploring your success in design concepts. Constructive criticism is emphasized during critiques.
ASSIGNMENTS/GRADING
Assignments are modeled as a tool for exploring different techniques within specific guidelines with the freedom of using your own creative expression. You are strongly encouraged to utilize design principles and elements to enhance your work in the class. You will be provided with grading outlines for each assignment.
FINAL EXAM
The two-part final exam will consist of the following: 1) 3-5 minute presentation of projects completed within the class. You will be expected to address the class and present material in a professional manner, 2) you will be given a time oriented deadline where your design/conceptual skills and program skills will be tested in a deadline situation.
MATERIALS:
Students will be required to have their own jump drive and save their files appropriately. You are to adhere to policy and procedures for lab use in your PCC handbook. Necessary printing of assignments will be required. You will need a large portfolio folder (discussed in class), Three-Ring Binder/Folder (Student Portfolio) to collect and keep track of your assignments and exercises. Color copies are to be submitted for project deadlines/critique and your final exam pieces.
Be expected to have basic tools such as pencils, black fine point/bold point Sharpies and colored pencils are handy. (No need to purchase high quality items this is only for project planning.) Tracing paper to work up projects sketches is suggested, but sketch paper will be accepted. You will also need black matte board for presenting your work.

90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
60-69% = D
00-59% = F
LATE/MAKE-UP WORK
Late work will be will be accepted with the acknowledgment that for every class period late, you will loose a letter grade. Assignments will only be accepted during scheduled class time. If you are unable to attend class you are required to inform the instructor of your absence. Deadline extensions may be granted in the case of an excused absence upon the following conditions: 1) it is an excused absence, 2) you have informed the instructor in a timely manner of your absence, 3) and proper documentation is provided.
CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE
As a courtesy to the instructor and your fellow students it is requested that you turn your cell phones/pagers off during class. You may bring and listen to your own music during “open” lab time with headphones and at a reasonable volume as to still be able to participate in class. Tardies are considered an absence 15 minutes after class begins. If you are unavoidably late please enter the classroom quietly and discretely as to not interrupt your fellow students. Any questions or issues can be addressed during open lab time as not to disrupt lecture/demonstration time.
ATTENDANCE
You are required to be present during all class meetings and studio time. Excessive absences will affect course grade: 3 unexcused absences will result in one full grade lower. When a student is absent it is your responsibility to get information from your fellow students. The instructor will provide you with handouts at a time that is convenient and not to interrupt class time. Leaving early will be regarded as an absence, as studio time is critical to your success. Those students who fail to attend class and wish to withdraw can do so on their own initiation (according to the withdraw procedures outlined in the PCC Student Handbook) the instructor will not withdraw you from the class.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Students are required to adhere to the policies outlined in the Student Handbook. Cheating, plagiarism, falsification, and personal misrepresentation are among violations in academic code. Violating these standards could result in warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Any student that is eligible for and needing academic adjustments or accommodations because of a disability should inform the instructor during the first week of class and provide the proper documentation to the PCC Learning Center so that appropriate accommodations can be made.
