MGD 207 ILLUSTRATION I 3 CR. (4.5 LBV) PRQ: CIS 110 or equivalent assessment test score. Instructor: TBA
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Addresses methods and techniques used in the profession of illustration for advertising, brochures, books and other forms of printed communications. Course concentrates on developing expertise in producing line and continuous-tone black-and-white art with emphasis on design and the creation of art for reproduction using Adobe Illustrator.
HOW WE LEARN: Classes will consist of lecture, demonstrations, studio time and critiques. Peer evaluations critical to exploring your success with illustration concepts. Constructive criticism is emphasized during critiques.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the course, students will
- Use a variety of media and processes to create illustrations.
- Analyze actual illustrations how the various mediums and methods work in facilitating visual communication.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of vocabulary, materials, and basic technology used in illustration.
- Select, analyze and compose elements and compositions that communicate ideas and sensibilities.
- Assemble and assess a presentation of your work that demonstrates professionalism.
CLASS TOOLS:
- A jump drive (Can be purchased at any office supply store)
- Black Matt boards (Can be purchased at any art supply store)
- Class text.
ASSIGNMENTS:
- Five assignments will be given over the course of the class. Being able to meet deadlines is a crucial principle in the realm of design, and consequently no assignments will be accepted after the due date unless arrangements have been made in advance with the instructor.
- Assignments will be presented to the class for review.
- If you are not satisfied with your grade on an assignments, it may be revised and handed in at the end of class for re-grading.
- All assignments will be presented in a professional manner. Assignments will be mounted on a black matt board with a 3-inch top; 3-inch sides; & 4-inch base border.
- Each class period will begin with a short 3 question quiz worth 3 points per question and 1 point for your name. Material for this quiz will come from reading assignments, lectures and class discussion up to that day and your will be document that you were present at the start of class. Once the quiz is over you cannot take that quiz and there are no make ups.
- The mid-term will be an online written exam focusing on elements of material from the text book, lectures and about Adobe Illustrator.
- The final exam will have an online portion like the mid.
Grading Scale:
90-100% =A
80- 89% = B
70- 79% = C
60- 69% = D
00- 59% = F
Grade Calculation: Final grades are based on the average of the mid term and final exam grades, the quizzes and the five assignments. Each of these are 25% of the grade and only 20 of the quizzes will be counted.
Late work/Make-up work: Late work will be accepted with the acknowledgment that for every class period late you will lose one letter grade. Assignments will only be accepted during scheduled class time. If you are unable to attend class you are required to inform the instructor of your absence. Deadline extensions may be granted in the case of an excused absence upon the following conditions: 1) it is an excused absence, 2) you have informed the instructor in a timely manner of your absence, 3) and proper documentation is provided.
Classroom etiquette: As a courtesy to the instructor and your fellow students it is requested that you turn your cell phones/pagers off during class. You may bring and listen to your own music during “open” lab time with headphones and at a reasonable volume as to still be able to participate in class. Tardies are considered an absence 15 minutes after class begins. If you are unavoidably late please enter the classroom quietly and discretely as to not interrupt your fellow students. Any questions or issues can be addressed during open lab time as not to disrupt lecture/demonstration time.
Attendance: You are required to be present during all class meetings and studio time. Excessive absences will affect course grade, 3 unexcused absences will result in one full grade lower. When a student is absent it is your responsibility to get information from your fellow students. The instructor will provide you with handouts at a time that is convenient and not to interrupt class time. Leaving early will be regarded as an absence, as studio time is critical to your success. Those students who fail to attend class and wish to withdraw can do so on their own initiation (according to the withdraw procedures outlined in the PCC Student Handbook) the instructor will not withdraw you from the class.
Academic integrity: Students are required to adhere to the policies outlined in the Student Handbook. Cheating, plagiarism, falsification, and personal misrepresentation are among violations in the academic code. Violating these standards could result in warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
Students with disabilities: Any student that is eligible for and needing academic adjustments or accommodations because of a disability should inform the instructor during the first week of class and provide the proper documentation to the PCC Learning Center, 549-3393, so that appropriate accommodations can be made. |
