COURSE SYLLABUS

1. TITLE OF COURSE: Intermediate Insurance Billing and Coding
  PREFIX/NUMBER: MOT 210 CREDIT HOURS: 3
2. PREREQUISITE: HPR 178 Medical Terminology highly recommended.  MOT 208 CPT4 and  MOT 209  ICD9CM coding highly recommended to be taken before MOT 210 if no coding experience.
3. RESOURCES NEEDED:

  SUPPLIES: Pens, pencils, and notebooks for note taking.
4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Covers how to abstract information from medical records and code it for insurance purposes. 
5. COURSE GOAL: To further coding knowledge and skills using the ICD-9-CM and CPT procedure codes, including both diagnosis and procedure codes in both physician office and hospital settings.
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  By the end of the course, students will
  (A) Be introduced to the basics of the various payment classification systems for reimbursement from the major insurance companies.
  (B) To learn to code from the various types of documentation in patient records.
  (C) Develop further skills and comfort levels when assigning the appropriate codes.
  (D) Apply the coding guidelines utilized in both the ICD9 and CPT4 coding books in selecting the appropriate codes.
  (E) To apply knowledge of medical terminology.

    1 pt per question answered correctly.
    -5 pts deducted from total score if instructor will allow late homework.
    0 pts = not turned in on time and instructor will not accept late homework.

Special Remarks:
1. Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings. 
2. Drop/Withdrawal:  If you are unable to complete this course, the student must complete the drop/withdrawal procedure within the deadline dates;  see PCC catalog.
3. Missed Exams:  Makeup at the discretion of the instructor.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of quizzes and tests may be allowed. 
4. Course Modifications:  The instructor reserves the right to modify this course to better meet the needs of the student.

9. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
