COURSE SYLLABUS

1. TITLE OF COURSE: Advanced Medical Transcription
  PREFIX/NUMBER: MOT142 CREDIT HOURS: 4
2. PREREQUISITE: HPR178; HPR 278, MOT 132, Word processing knowledge; 50 wpm.   

Anatomy and Physiology class highly recommended.

Two diskette; highlighters, Steno flip pad or 3 ring binder with 26 alphabetic dividers, pencil or pen.

COURSE GOAL:

To prepare the student to transcribe and format a variety of medical reports applying the knowledge, understanding and skills required to transcribe medical dictation with accuracy, clarity, and timeliness at a rate of 50 wpm with a minimum of errors, applying the principles of professional and ethical conduct.
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the course, students will
(A) Student continues to learn medical terminology as it applies to specific medical reports.
(B) Student transcribes approximately 100 reports from specialties involving the eight body systems.
(C) Student recognizes ethnic dictation readily enough to transcribe with accuracy.
(D) Student demonstrates the skill to use resource materials effectively.
(E) Student demonstrates the skill to use excellent English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
(F) Student demonstrates the skill to type reports and letters in appropriate styles.
(G) Student demonstrates the skill to use decision-making skills.
(H) Student applies pertinent medicolegal policies and procedures when necessary in the transcription process.
(I) Student uses the Internet for learning and gaining information in transcribing reports accurately.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

A minimum of three transcription tests will be given during the semester.  Transcription tests will be graded 20% speed; 80 accuracy.  See attached scale.

Spelling words will be dictated from the units assigned.  Students will have approximately 10-45 minutes of dictionary/reference book time after words are dictated.

  Each report turned in as scheduled and mailable                       10 pts.

Each report turned in late                                                         -1 pt.

Each report with major errors (omission, spelling)                    -1 pt.

Three minor errors, (i.e., format, capitalization)=1 major error -1 pt.

Student is to type what is dictated; do not make corrections except for mechanics, subject/verb agreement,  paragraphing, or his/her and left/right.

Listening Exercises
Medical reports with missing words or phrases will be given to the student. Student must listen to the accompanying cassette dictation to supply the missing word(s).  Students may use any “helpful” materials except there can be no copying from one another.  These may be done at home or in the open lab.  One point given per word omitted on handout copy.  Points will be converted to a percentage.  See scale below.
D.  Timed Writings  10%
A minimum of three timed writings will be graded during the semester to comprise a grade for TIMED WRITINGS.  Timings can have no more than five errors to qualify.  The top three timings will be used to compute the grade.  Timings must be five minutes in length using medical material.

(A conversion number of 30 is added to NWAM to convert to a percentage grade,) i.e.:   58 wpm

Special Remarks:

1.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist.  Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.

4. Cheating will be grounds for dismissal from the class.
5. Assigned exercises will be due weekly.

7. Reports typed are to be Error Checked. Only major errors will be counted against you.

PACE YOURSELF SO THAT ALL CHAPTERS ARE COMPLETED BEFORE FINAL WEEK.  Chapter 20 is the test chapter.  Most of it may be done outside of the classroom.
One and one-half chapters should be completed every week.

9. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
10. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
  The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity.
