COURSE SYLLABUS 1. TITLE OF COURSE: DIGITAL DEVICES II PREFIX/NUMBER: ELT 148 CREDIT HOURS: 3.0 2. PREREQUISITE: ELT 147 3. RESOURCES NEEDED: TEXT: Digital Systems: Principles and Applications. Tocci Digital Systems Lab Manual, A Troubleshooting Approach. Ambrosio, DeLoach SUPPLIES: Calculation: Scientific calculator as specified by instructor. 4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Continues ELT 147 with emphasis on the operation and application of programmable logic devices, synchronous counters, multiplexers, liquid crystal displays, ROM and RAM. Includes specifications of ICs, display multiplexing, and design and minimization of circuits. Troubleshooting is emphasized. 5. COURSE GOAL: To familiarize the student with fundamentals of Digital Systems, and to develop laboratory experimental techniques. 6. COURSE OBJECTIVES: When students have successfully completed this course, they will understand the following and be able to: (A) Identify and demonstrate understanding of Numbering Systems through mathematical manipulation. (B) Demonstrate understanding of AND, OR, INVERTER, and combinatorial logic gates through the development and verification of Truth Tables. (C) Demonstrate Concepts of Boolean Rules and DeMorgans’ Theorems as related to Truth Tables. (D) Demonstrate understanding and applications of Latches, Flip-Flops and Schmitt Triggers in monitoring processes. (E) Become familiar with the applications of programmable logic devices and memory types. (F) Understanding the principles of interfacing digital circuits with analog systems. (G) Understand the operation of Digital Arithmetic circuits and applications. (H) Demonstrate uses of MSI logic circuits including Multiplexers, Demuotiplexers, Encoders, and Decoders. 7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES: Unit grades will be averaged along with laboratory experiments and final exam. All Laboratory 30% of total grade All Quizzes 40% of total grade Midterm 15% of total grade Final 15% of total grade Unit tests are given by the instructor at the conclusion of each unit of study. OBJECTIVES: The objectives are enumerated and clearly stated. 1. TEXT REFERENCES: All experiments are referenced to the appropriate page numbers in the text used in the lecture course, or as listed by the instructor. 2. Materials Required: All of the materials required to complete experiments are available in lab kits. Test equipment is available from equipment room or at work benches in instructor/equipment room. 3. Attendance: College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings. If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week. Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog. 4. Tardy Policy: A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies. 5. Assignments/Missed Exams: It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments. If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed. Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist. Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion. 8. COURSE OUTLINE Tentative Schedule 9. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities. 10. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation.
