COURSE GOAL:

After successfully completing this course, students will understand the basic concepts of Business Law and will be prepares for entry-level employment in the field of business administration.

6.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

(A)

To provide a basic understanding of the history, structure, procedure, and jurisdiction in the U.S. legal system.

(B)

To clarify the distinction between civil and criminal law and to provide an understanding of the source of American law, i.e. common law, constitutional law, statutory law, and commercial law.

(C)

To establish the importance of ethics and social responsibilities in making business decisions and to encourage debate over the tradeoffs inherent in ethical decision-making in the competitive world.

(D)

To introduce the students to the classification and elements of legally binding contracts and the remedies after a breach of such contract has occurred.

(E)

To provide an introduction to the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) which is the statutory law governing the formation of sales contracts.

(F)

To provide and understanding of the legal implications of the basic forms of business organization, and to introduce the students to the fundamental concepts on antitrust law.

(G)

To clarify the major elements of the agency relationships and the partnership relationship as they are used to conduct business.

(H)

To develop an understanding of the significance of international law in a global economy.

Special Remarks:

1.

Attendance: College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 9 hours will usually constitute 20% of a three-credit semester course. Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

2.

Tardy Policy: A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

3.

Assignments/Missed Exams: It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist. Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor’s discretion.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

Teaching methods will vary one instructor to another, but some of the methods that may be use are: lecture, class discussion, group activities, mock trials, papers special research activities, and the incorporation of current, topical issues.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

 

The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
