COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

Focuses on the operation of the American business system.  Covers fundamentals of the economy, careers and opportunities, marketing, management, production, governmental regulations, tools of business and social responsibilities.

COURSE GOAL:

To demonstrate understanding of the social and economic system in the United States and to apply this understanding to selected situations.

6.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

(A)

To identify and choose, from information given about business situations, data needed to complete business forms and procedures.

(B)

To analyze and interpret information about a particular business situation in order to solve problems and make decisions.

(C)

To demonstrate an understanding of how businesses are formed and managed and to apply this understanding to certain situations.

(D)

To explain the way businesses operate in the major functional areas of marketing, production and operation, accounting, personnel info. and control, and to apply these practices to certain situations.

(E)

To explain advanced management practices of larger businesses and corporations and to apply these practices to certain situations.

(F)

To explain how large U.S. Corporations conduct business in the U.S. and abroad, to apply and develop data in certain situations, and to draw conclusions about their impact on society and the need for legal regulations.

(G)

To explain the extent and nature of interdependency between large and small businesses

(H)

To explain interactions between employers, employees, line and staff departments, business managers and community representatives and sellers and buyers.

Special Remarks:

1.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings. If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 9 hours will usually constitute 20% of a three-credit semester course.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

2.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless he/she can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

3.

Missed exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  Tests will be provided over WebCT and can be taken within a four day time period.  Any tests taken after the testing period will have 10% of the total points deducted from the test score.  All work is expected on time.  If extenuating circumstances interfere with your ability to complete the work on time, please discuss with your instructor..

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. Projects are designed to enhance the discussions of the materials.  The instructor will assign point values to such activities.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

 

The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity.
