1.    TITLE OF COURSE:    Blueprint Reading (Residential/Commercial)

4.    RESOURCES NEEDED:

                                                    Printreading for Residential and Light Commercial Construction, Pt 2, 4th ed, Thomas E., & Toenjes, Leonard P.

5.    COURSE GOAL:     This course introduces students to reading and interpreting blueprints for residential, commercial, and industrial construction.

6.    COURSE OBJECTIVE:    Having successfully completed this course, the student should be able to read and interpretate typical residential and commercial plans.  The student should be able to formulate working drawings and order material from those drawings.  The student will have the ability to use prints for trouble shooting within and outside of structures.

7.    EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

The student will be graded on his/her demonstrated skills at completing homework assignments.  Additionally, students will demonstrate an understanding of the material presented in units by completing a mid-term and final examination.  Grades will be calculated using the following guidelines:

                                    Homework assignments......................80%

                                    Examinations......................................15%

                                    Attendance..........................................5%

Assignments completed late will be penalized with a loss of grade points.

8.   COURSE OUTLINE

I.    Introduction and Working Drawings and Prints - Class introduction, introductions to various construction plans, drafting methods, and CAD.

II.    Basics of Working Drawings - Sheet sizes, sketching, geometric figures, orthographic projection, scales, measuring, and dimensioning.

III.    Symbols and Abbreviations  -  Review of symbols and abbreviations used in construction drawings.

IV.    Floor Plans - Basic floor plans, scales, cutting plane, and review of typical floor plans.

V.    Elevation Views  -  Review exterior appearances of structures and symbols used.

VI.    Sectional Views - Longitudinal and traverse sections, different types of framing, and brick/masonry construction.

VII.    Detail Views - Detail drawings, dimensions, scales, references, cutting planes, interior elevations, structural details, window and door details, and other miscellaneous details.

VIII.    Trade Information  -  Concrete foundation work, masonry, electrical, plumbing, forced warm air heating, hort water heating, and AC units.

IX.    Construction Materials - Line alphabet, architect's scale, dimensions, conventions, windows, doors, stairs, and modular measurement.  Symbols for plumbing, HVAC, wood, masonry, concrete, CMU, structural steel insulation, and roofing.

X.    Plans  -  Orientation, room considerations, plumbing, and electrical.
