COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course will cover the theory and procedures used in the diagnosis of pulmonary disease through pulmonary function testing.

6.

COURSE GOAL:

The major learning outcomes intended for this course are:

A.

The student will identify and differentiate between the various pulmonary function tests and what they measure.

B.

The student will develop the ability to analyze pulmonary function data and interpret the results, specifically obstructive vs. restrictive disease.

C.

The student will be able to identify different pieces of equipment used to perform pulmonary function tests.

D.

The student should be able to recommend when pulmonary function testing should be performed.

E.

The student should be able to give instructions to a patient in doing a pulmonary function test and evaluate their performance.

F.

The student should be able to identify diseases that are obstructive vs. restrictive.

This course will be an Internet/Hybrid course. It does contain a lab portion, which all students will be required to attend.   All lecture information will be contained in Desire2Learn. Students are required to sign into Desire2Learn every week. This is how attendance will be kept.  Any student who fails to sign in between Monday-Saturday evening will be counted absent from class.

Since this course is an Internet/Hybrid course, most communication will be done through VISTA/WEBCT.  However, at scheduled times there will be class meetings/labs which will be mandatory and require the students attendance. The class meetings/labs are designed to allow students to interact with the instructor in person to help clarify some of the technical requirements of pulmonary function testing.

Class meetings/Labs-

Discussion will be posted throughout the semester. Students are required to participate in the discussions once they are posted.  Periodic class meetings and Labs will be held with the intent of allowing the student to meet with the instructor for additional instruction and help with understanding some of the technical aspects of pulmonary function testing.  The class meetings will be held on Wednesday’s after the Critical Care II class and will correspond with the Pediatric class. These class meetings are mandatory and the absentee policy will be followed.  The class meeting dates are:

Wednesday, Sept. 17th
Wednesday, Oct. 15th
Wednesday, Nov. 12th
Wednesday, Dec. 3rd

Modules to be covered are:

1.  Pulmonary Function Equipment

2.  Basic Spirometry

3.  Lung Volume Measurements

4.  Diffusion Capacity Measurements

5.  Special Tests

7.

Module Exams

An exam will be given at the end of each Module. Questions will be of the recall, application and analysis type.  Answering the questions will require not only a recall of memorized material, but demonstrating a clear understanding of how technical considerations can be important in the clinical setting.

Students will take all exams using Desire2Learn unless other arrangements are made and approved. Time limits will be placed on each exam.  Since all of the performance exams are given on Desire2Learn and remain open for several days, the only time a student will be allowed to make up a missed exam is if the student submits a doctor’s excuse or documentation showing the reasons why the exam was missed. If a student is unable to take an exam because of Internet disruption he/she is to contact the instructor. If it is after 5:00 p.m. or on the weekends the student is to contact the instructor through the Desire2Learn mail box. If the problem occurs during campus hours, M-F 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., the student can call the instructors office.

8.

Final Examination

A comprehensive final exam will be given over information covered during the entire course.  Specific date and time for this exam is to be announced at a later date.

9.

Assignments

Assignments will be given on a weekly basis to enhance the practice of utilizing concepts discussed in this course. Late assignments are not accepted.  All assignments, unless specified by the instructor, are to be submitted through Desire2Learn. Assignments are given in advance, and students are given several day’s to submit the assignment.  If a student is unable to submit the assignment because of Internet disruption he/she is to contact the instructor. If it is after 5:00 p.m. or on the weekends the student is to contact the instructor through the Desire2Learn mail box. If the problem occurs during campus hours, M-F 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., the student can call the instructors office.  DO NOT E-MAIL the assignments through the mail box unless the instructor specifies differently. They will not be accepted.
