COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course will cover the theory and procedures used in the diagnosis of pulmonary disease through pulmonary function testing.

COURSE GOAL:

 

The major learning outcomes intended for this course are:

 

A.

The student will identify and differentiate between the various pulmonary function tests and what they measure.

 

B.

The student will develop the ability to analyze pulmonary function data and interpret the results, specifically obstructive vs. restrictive disease.

  C. The student will be able to identify different pieces of equipment used to perform pulmonary function tests.
  D. The student should be able to recommend when pulmonary function testing should be performed.
  E. The student should be able to give instructions to a patient in doing a pulmonary function test and evaluate their performance.
  F. The student should be able to identify diseases that are obstructive vs. restrictive.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

This course will be an Internet course.  All information will be contained in WEBCT. Students are required to sign into the WEBCT every week.  This is how attendance will be kept.  Any student who fails to sign in between Monday-Saturday evening will be counted absent from class. 

Since this course is an Internet course, all communication will be done through WEBCT.  It is essential that if a student fails to understand the material presented or read, he/she is to contact the instructor either through the WEBCT e-mail or the telephone. 

Unit to be covered are:

1.  Pulmonary Function Equipment

2.  Basic Spirometry

3.  Lung Volume Measurements

4.  Diffusion Capacity Measurements

5.  Special Tests

8. Unit Exams

Questions will be of the recall, application and analysis type.  Answering  the questions will require not only a recall of memorized material, but demonstrating a clear understanding of how technical considerations can be important in the clinical setting.   

Students will take all exams using WebCT unless other arrangements are made and approved  Time limits will be placed on each exam.  Any test that is not taken during its availability will be recorded as a "ZERO". .   Students failing to attend class and failing to contact the instructor will not be allowed the privilege of a makeup exam. Missed quizzes cannot be made up.  In the event of a makeup exam, the test may not necessarily be the same given to the class; however, the content will always cover assigned readings.

All major exams will be given on the scheduled dates announced. Make up exams will be given only to those students who contact the instructor before class to inform the instructor of an uncontrollable absence. Students failing to attend class and failing to contact the instructor will not be allowed to make up exams.

 

Final Examination 

The final exam will be given during the week of December 6, 2004 and will be comprehensive over information covered during the entire course.  Specific date and time for this exam is to be announced at a later date.

 

Homework/Assignments
Homework will be given on a weekly basis to enhance the practice of utilizing concepts discussed in this course.  Homework will be given a due date and it is to be sent back to the instructor as indicated. Please note that late homework will NOT be accepted for credit.

8.

SPECIAL REMARKS

1.

The student is expected to meet with the instructor if he/she does not understand the material.

2.

Failure to pass this class with a 75% or above will result in the student being placed on a probationary status for the remainder of the program, and will be required to adhere to the probation guidelines. A student earning below 70% in this class will automatically be dropped from the program.

3.

The student is expected to spend 2-3 hours per credit hour preparing for class and reading the assignments.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, homework activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
