5. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The course is a continued focus on the care of critically ill patients. Topics include noninvasive positive pressure ventilation, initiating, monitoring (including homodynamics and waveforms), managing and weaning from mechanical ventilation.
6. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
a. Module Exams (30%)
An exam will be given at the end of each Module. Questions will be of the recall, application and analysis type. Answering the questions will require not only a recall of memorized material, but demonstrating a clear understanding of how technical considerations can be important in the clinical setting.
Students will take all exams using VISTA/WEBCT unless other arrangements are made and approved. Time limits will be placed on each exam. Since all of the performance exams are given on VISTA/WEBCT, and remain open for several days, the only time a student will be allowed to make up a missed exam is if the student submits a doctor’s excuse or documentation showing the reasons why the exam was missed. If a student is unable to take an exam because of Internet disruption he/she is to contact the instructor. If it is after 5:00 p.m. or on the weekends the student is to contact the instructor through the VISTA/WEBCT mail box. If the problem occurs during campus hours, M-F 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., the student can call the instructors office.
b. Assignments/Case Studies (35%)
Assignments will be given on a weekly basis to enhance the practice of utilizing concepts discussed in this course. Late assignments are not accepted. All assignments, unless specified by the instructor, are to be submitted through VISTA/WEBCT. Assignments are given in advance, and students are given several day’s to submit the assignment. If a student is unable to submit the assignment because of Internet disruption he/she is to contact the instructor. If it is after 5:00 p.m. or on the weekends the student is to contact the instructor through the VISTA/WEBCT mail box. If the problem occurs during campus hours, M-F 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., the student can call the instructors office. DO NOT E-MAIL the assignments through the mail box unless the instructor specifies differently. They will not be accepted.
In Section III Case studies will be given. Many of these will require outside work and are to be submitted as instructed.
c. Final Examination (20%)
A comprehensive final examination will cover topics discussed in the course. Questions will be of the same type as the module exams.
d. Portfolio: (15%).
Each student will be required to keep a portfolio of all work completed int his class. –See instructions for portfolio.
e. Workbook: (Pass/fail)
The workbook will be due during the final week of class. Failure to complete the assignment in the workbook prior to taking your final will result in you failing the class. Workbook must be turned in prior to taking final exam. Any student who shows up for the final without the workbook will not be allowed to take the exam. The only exception to this rule is for distant students. However, for distant students the workbook must be sent and received the final week for credit.

Special Remarks:
1. The student is expected to meet with the instructor if he/she does not understand the material.
2. An earned grade less than 77% is considered failing. If a student earns a grade less than 77% on an exam, quiz, assignment, he/she will be given one chance to raise the grade. How this will be done will be at the instructor’s discretion. The highest grade that will be given for any make-up will be 78% Only one make-up exam, quiz or assignment can be re-submitted during the semester.
3. The student is expected to spend 2-3 hours per credit hour preparing for this class.
4. Attendance policy is outlined in the Respiratory Care Handbook and is followed.
