5. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will allow for the review of therapies, procedures and theory that the student may or may not have experienced in the clinical arena up to this point in time.

COURSE GOAL:

 

The goal of this course is to cultivate higher order thinking skills in order to better deal with issues of clinical care. The emphasis of this course is to foster a systematic method of dealing with information so that the student can become more effective in drawing conclusions, making decisions, making inferences, and effectively communicating this information.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

Topical Examinations (12 - 15)

Questions will be of the recall, application and analysis type.  Answering  the questions will require not only a recall of memorized material, but demonstrating a clear understanding of how to analyze and apply information.

Students will take all exams on WebCT, unless other arrangements are made. Time limits will be placed on each exam.  Any test that is not taken during its availability will be recorded as a "ZERO".

 The student will have up to three (3) opportunities to improve their grade on each exam.  The student is expected to do the assigned reading/activity and then take the exam.  If they are not satisfied with their performance, the student is encouraged to go back over the assigned reading/activity before a reattempt of the topical exam.

Threaded Discussions (12 - 15)

Twenty (20) points can be earned each week by participating in the discussion of the week on WebCT.  This will usually consist of a case study or activity that will be monitored by the instructor.  Each student in the class is expected to participate in the discussion with a minimum of two (2) contributions per week to the topic.  Contributions must be of a thoughtful nature and help in progressing through a  thorough assessment of the case.  Responses such as "I agree" or "Yeah, that's right" will not be acceptable. Any response that is posted must be defended with information and thought.

SPECIAL REMARKS

1.

The student is expected to communicate with the instructor if he/she does not understand the material.

2.

Failure to pass this class with a 75% or above will result in the student being placed on a probationary status for the remainder of the program, and will be required to adhere to the probation guidelines. A student earning below 70% in this class will automatically be dropped from the program.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, and the topical exams.

The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
