COURSE DESCRIPTION: |
Provides an eight-week, full-time or an equal amount of time, part-time, supervised clinical internship to develop professional behaviors consistent with the profession standards and ethics, apply previously learned academic knowledge as an OT team member. The student will gain experience in application of the OT treatment process from admission to discharge for patients from a variety of socio-cultural backgrounds and ages in the practice area of physical disabilities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: |
|
|
During each fieldwork the student will: |
|
|
A. |
Use available sources for collecting evaluation data relevant to the client. |
|
|
B. |
Select information from data sources (including the medical/psychological history, the social services interview or family reports) that is relevant to the needs of the client. |
|
|
C. |
Obtain pertinent data from interviews and observations. |
|
|
D. |
Correctly administer assigned evaluation procedures and selected assessments to obtain information relevant to client performance with the use of occupation for the purpose of assessment. |
|
|
E. |
Develop age and socio-culturally appropriate programs based on short and long term goals in collaboration with the supervising OTR. |
|
|
F. |
Carry out programs which reflect the identified goals of individuals or groups of clients. |
|
|
G. |
Understand the meaning and dynamics of occupation and purposeful activity including the interaction of performance areas, performance components, and performance contexts. |
|
|
H. |
Understand the effects of health, disability, disease processes, and traumatic injury to the individual within the context of family and society. |
|
|
I. |
Effectively give instructions and, if appropriate, select media/techniques in implementing programs. |
|
|
J. |
Use the techniques of group process to achieve group goals when working with the group. |
|
|
K. |
Identify and report the need for program change to the supervising OTR. |
|
|
L. |
Consider each client's needs and socio-cultural background when initiating and establishing a relationship. |

M. |
Attend to safety needs of the client, self and team members. |
|
|
N. |
Attend, in a therapeutic manner, to specific manifestations of client behavior. |

|
|

P. |
Communicate and collaborate with supervisor and relevant others to select, adapt, and sequence relevant occupations and purposeful activities to facilitate implementation of treatment goals. These occupations and purposeful activities shall be directly related to performance areas, performance components, and performance contexts. They shall be meaningful to the client, maximizing participation and independence. |

Use therapeutic adaptation with occupations pertinent to the needs of the client. This shall include, but not be limited to, family/care provider training, environmental and behavioral modifications, orthotics, prosthetics, assistive devices, equipment, and other technologies. |
|

Maintain accurate written records/reports as required, and appropriately distinguish between subjective and objective data. |
|
|
S. |
Facilitate discharge planning by reviewing the needs of client/family/significant others, resources, and discharge environment. This includes, but is not limited to, identification of community, human, and fiscal resources, recommendations for environmental adaptations, and home programming. |
|
|
T. |
Recommend the need for termination of occupational therapy services when stated outcomes have been achieved. This includes a summary of occupational therapy outcomes, appropriate recommendations and referrals, and discussion with the client of post-discharge needs. |
|
|
U. |
Budget time for preparation, maintaining equipment, supplies and treatment area while carrying out assigned treatment program. |
|
|
V. |
Take advantage of opportunities to learn new techniques or refine those already known and establish service competency through documenting continuing education. |
|
|
W. |
Modify behavior in response to supervisory feedback. |
|
|
X. |
Respect the clients' rights to confidentiality, privacy and choice. |
|
|
Y. |
Handle personal and/or professional problems so that they do not interfere with the performance of duties. |
|
|
Z. |
Adhere to the policies and procedures of the facility. |

6. |
EVALUATION PROCEDURES: |
|
|
¨ No clinical assignment will be made until verification of CPR and Shots are in. |
|
|
¨ You must register for the appropriate term and buy Malpractice insurance each fall. If you fail to do either – you will receive no grade for your efforts. |
|
|
¨ Clinical assignment WILL BE CANCELLED if Transfer verification is not turned in 30 days prior to the end of the student’s academic portion of the program. (Don’t wait and then panic – do it NOW.) |
|
|
Grading will be obtained by using the American Occupational Therapy Association's Student Fieldwork Performance Report. This report will be completed by the fieldwork supervisor and reviewed prior to the student completing the fieldwork experiences. |
|
|
The student will not be assigned a grade for this course until they have completed the student evaluation of fieldwork experience - Level II, and turned in copies of at least four(4), Five-minute feedback forms for the first two weeks of the clinical.

Special Remarks: |
|
|
Student must complete the fieldwork experience with a "C" or better in order to receive credit from the occupational therapy assistant program and in order to take this national certification exam. |

7. |
COURSE OUTLINE |
|
|
Specific fieldwork objectives and schedules are established by the individual fieldwork sites and will be made available to students on the first day of their fieldwork experiences. |
|
8. |
REQUIREMENTS |
|
|
You must be registered for the appropriate course. |
|
|
You must have current malpractice insurance. |
|
|
You must have completed your transfers. |
|
|
You must have evidence that your required shots are up to date. |
|
|
You must have evidence in your file that your CPR card is current. |
|
|
You must pass the OSHA blood borne pathogens test. |
|
|
You must have your supervisor fill out 4 - 5 minute feedback forms the first 2 weeks. |
|
|
You must turn in your evaluation forms at the end of the 8 weeks. |
|
9. |
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: |
|
|
To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities. |
|
