Information about the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program 

Because of the personal and professional responsibilities the student must assume, an applicant should possess the following:

  • Commitment to full attendance and participation in all classes, significant preparation time, and fieldwork assignments at times other than class times and at places off-campus.
  • Vision adequate to ensure safety of self and others, observation of patient/client, and mobility in a variety of settings.
  • Hearing adequate to allow effective communication with patient/clients and others in person and by remote means, and to allow scanning of the environment for safety.
  • Tactile sensation adequate to allow the palpation and movement facilitation techniques included in basic occupational therapy services.
  • Gross and fine motor strength and coordination adequate to allow:
    • accurate use of measuring devices,
    • safe and effective transfer of objects, treatment media, and patient/clients during the course of treatment or education, and
    • efficient documentation of academic and clinical information by manual or other means.
  • Critical thinking ability adequate to allow mastery of basic course content, identify cause and effect relationships involved in scientific study and also in patient/client evaluation and treatment.
  • Interpersonal skills adequate to allow establishment of an effective working relationship with people of a variety of ages, socio-economic backgrounds, cultural and spiritual beliefs, and physical, cognitive, psychological, or developmental disabilities.  this includes patient/clients, families, co-workers, and others.
  • Communication abilities adequate to allow completion of coursework.

The occupational therapy assistant faculty is firmly committed to fostering the scientific and intellectual growth of the student and developing well qualified occupational therapy assistants.

Application Material Deadlines

Applications may be completed and turned into the program chairperson at any time and admission will be granted on a first come basic for all qualified applicants.

Entry into the Program

For a student to complete the program in two years they should start during the fall semester. A student may start at other times, or attend part-time; however, they may require a longer period of time to complete the program.

Admissions Information

The Admissions Committee determines all admissions to the program.  Candidates are selected on their academic preparation, references, work history, and community involvement.  Colorado residents and persons having prior occupational therapy experience are given preference.

Application instructions and forms for the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program may be obtained and should be returned or mailed to:  The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program, Pueblo Community College, 900 West Orman Avenue, Pueblo, Colorado  81004.  Applications will be accepted throughout the year.

Before the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program forwards your information to the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program’s Admission Committee for review and consideration the following information must be submitted in a timely manner:
  1. Application for Undergraduate Admission to Colorado Collegiate Institutions.  (Application form is available through the Admissions Office 719-549-3010 or you can apply online. Visit the MyCommunity ED site and submit the Admission Application).
  2. Supplemental Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Application.  (Form available through the OTA Program office or may be printed from the forms link on our OTA home page.)
  3. PCC Basic Skills Assessment Test.  (May be scheduled by calling 719-549-3393.)  A reading level of 12th grade is required for admission into the program unless the student provides documentation of a qualified disability.  ACT and SAT scores may be substituted for the PCC Assessment Test.  (See College Catalog for policy.)  Prior college level English and math grades can substitute for portions of the basic skill tests.  If a student is enrolled in appropriate courses to increase their basic skill levels, they may be admitted  conditionally.
  4. One official copy of transcripts from all colleges/universities attended.  A combined grade point average of 2.5 for all course work transferred to PCC and course work completed at PCC is required for admission.
  5. Two character reference forms completed according to instruction.  (Forms available through the OTA Program office or may be printed from the forms link on our OTA home page.)
  6. Work History Form completed and returned.  (Form available through the OTA office or may be printed from the forms link on our OTA home page.)
  7. If an applicant has not attended college, a copy of their high school transcript or a copy of their GED scores.

Non Selections for Admission

A person not selected for admission must request in writing that the file be reactivated for the following admission period; however, transcripts, addresses, records, etc., will need to be updated so that information reflects the current status of the applicant. In addition, a reapplication will be subject to compliance with the requirements of the ensuring admission period. It is recommended that person who is not selected and who continues to remain interested in pursuing a career as an occupational therapy assistant contact the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program, 900 W. Orman Ave., Pueblo, Colorado, to make appointments for advisement, questions concerning the program, or acceptability of transfer credit prior to or during the application period.
