Beginning Medical Terminology

HPR178 (or permission of instructor)

This course is for students of  Business Office Administration

 

3.

RESOURCES NEEDED:

Use of anatomy and physiology books located in the library as needed. A medical dictionary or use of an online medical dictionary is recommended.

 

TEXT:

As assigned

SUPPLIES:

Textbook, paper, notebook, pen or pencil. Students may use a home computer or the PCC open lab to complete the homework and tests.

 

COMPUTER SPECS:

Student may use any system utilizing current Windows Operating System.  Use of PCC online distance learning using Web CT Vista is required.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Provides students with an opportunity to learn and to advance skills in medical terminology.  The course requires using a computer.

5.

COURSE GOAL:

To learn medical terminology for use in an allied health occupation, medical transcription, insurance coding/billing, medical office administrative assistant, or career preparation in a medical field..

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, students will be able

To review word roots, suffixes, prefixes, and combining forms.

(B)

To build increased medical terminology referring to each system.

(C)

To define common terms related to diseases.

(D)

To define common pharmacological terms.

(E)

To define commonly used abbreviations as used in medical records.

(F)

To define the body planes and directions.

(G)

To spell drugs and laboratory tests.

(H)

To read documentation in a medical record.

 

(I) 

 To understand the role of confidentiality in working with medical records.

 

(J)

To prepare students to enter anatomy and physiology class with basic knowledge of body systems and functions.

 

(K)

To prepare students to enter the beginning medical transcription class.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

 

A.

COMPUTERIZED CHAPTER TESTS (no retakes)  . . . . . . . .      50%

 

 

  • Students can practice sample tests at home.  They are available online, in the text and on CD ROM.
  • Tests are M/C, fill-in, matching, and true and false, taken via the Internet using WebCT.
  • Tests and Quizzes are closed book and timed. Any questions unanswered or answered after fifteen minutes are not scored by the computer.  Be sure to save answers.
  • Chapter tests must be taken on the computer in WebCT and it may be to the student's best interest to use a campus computer so there are no technical failures. 
  • Tests may not be taken late.  Tests are not available online after the expiration date.  (contact instructor if you miss a test)
  • Test dates will be assigned by your instructor.   Considerations for technological failures will be considered.  
  •  No two tests are the same.
  • All tests are scored automatically.  See grades on My Grades in WebCT.

Students enrolled in fully online classes are required to participate in weekly online discussions.  Weekly postings will be graded for relevance and content.  Classroom students will be evaluated for attendance and participation. (When course is offered as a hybrid)

  • Same as above information for midterm.  
  • Since this is such an important test, it is advisable to take the final on a campus computer so there will be NO computer failures or interruptions at home.

Special Remarks:

1.

NO SHOW DROPS:  For Distance Learning, students must communicate by email or take the first quiz by the end of the drop/add period.  The instructor has to drop a student if there is no activity in that time.  A student may be reinstated to the course by contacting the instructor and requesting reinstatement.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

2.

COMMUNICATIONS/PARTICIPATION:    Students should communicate through email in WebCT on a regular or periodic basis.  Bulletin board announcements go to all students and it is fun to have a threaded conversation that all the class members can view.  Email is private to selected individual.

3.

LATE EXAMS/QUIZZES:   Makeup of expired quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.  Student is to contact instructor.

4.

STUDENT CONDUCT: Students shall conduct themselves professionally and avoid all actions of misconduct as delineated in the PCC catalog. Actions such as cheating and plagiarism may result in a test score of zero and could possibly result in failure for the course.  Rudeness is not tolerated.

5.

COURSE MODIFICATIONS: The instructor reserves the right to modify this course to better meet the needs of the student.

6.

DROP/WITHDRAWAL: If you are unable to complete this course, the student must complete the drop/withdrawal procedure within the deadline dates, see PCC catalog.

7.

If a student does not have a computer, the computer labs on campus will have to be used.  Computer labs on campus will not lose connections with WebCT even if the Internet goes down.  If a student has a poor Internet connection, the student should use a campus computer to take weekly quiz, midterm, and final. 

8.

COMPLETION OF COURSE:  The student may complete this course on an accelerated basis if student so desires.

COURSE OUTLINE

 

The text will be indicated on the course outline and may change form semester to semester

 

The course is designed to cover one unit per week. 

There is a midterm and a final.  

The unit quizzes go along with each unit in the text book.

 

 

 

10.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in online discussions, and take tests weekly using computer software. 

11.
