COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Prepares the student in theory and in practical skills in the field of phlebotomy.  Recommended for either the healthcare practitioner who is interested in updating skills or in the novice student who id developing career skills. Students learn skills in obtaining blood samples through capillary draws, venipuncture, and through collection processes onto slides.  Use of a variety of on-site testing equipment is introduced, and procurement of samples for accurate laboratory testing is stressed.  Universal Blood and Body Fluid Precautions, as related to OSHA is taught and practiced with attention to absolute compliance practice.  This course is delivered through both lecture/laboratory methods with attention to application to theory in a clinical setting in order to master tactile skills

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

By the end of the course, students will

 

A. Identify the role of the Phlebotomist in today’s healthcare environment

 

B. Identify Federal guidelines necessary in providing a safe workplace

 

C. List measures to assure a safe workplace

 

D. Outline measures to provide customer service to clients for whom the Phlebotomist interacts

 

E. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system

 

F. Identify equipment necessary for performing phlebotomy

 

G. Perform necessary steps to successful venipuncture

 

H.

Perform the necessary steps to successfully perform skin punctures

 

I. Describe alterations in procedures, which require adaptation in procedure

 

J. Describe possible complications that may occur with phlebotomy procedures

 

K.

Identify common laboratory tests and the proper equipment necessary to obtain specimens

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
