COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Instructs students in advanced phlebotomy techniques to include patients in trauma, neonatal, geriatric, and long term acute care areas.  In addition, laboratory procedures taught include specimen processing and advanced point-of-care instrumentation.  This course includes lecture/lab combination that teaches theory and direct application of theoretic content and clinical opportunities for students to master learned skills

5.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, students will

A. Describe and actively apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the venous system for pediatric and neonatal patients while performing blood specimen collection

B. Describe and actively apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology of venous system for geriatric and acute long term patients

C. Demonstrate ability to successfully perform difficult blood collections for testing on difficult veins using lancet, butterfly set-ups, syringes, and other techniques

D. Demonstrate the ability to perform point-of-care testing to include pregnancy tests, drug screening, glucose, and other miscellaneous tests
