DESCRIPTION:          Course provides comprehensive dental hygiene clinical management
techniques for periodontal patients supported by application of
basic clinical research sciences. Focus is on the ‘therapy”
component of periodontics including instructional sessions
covering the general principles of periodontal surgery, the

5.    COURSE GOAL:       The primary didactic educational goal of the curriculum in periodontics
is the acquisition of knowledge of the biologic basis for periodontal
therapy. The primary clinical educational goal is the acquisition of disease
recognition skills, and the development of clinical skills necessary to perform
initial, nonsurgical periodontal therapy and periodontal maintenance therapy
within the concept of a comprehensive dental treatment plan.

This particular course (DEH 282 -- Periodontics III) primarily addresses the "therapy" component of periodontics. Included are instructional sessions covering the general principles of periodontal surgery, nonsurgical periodontal therapy, the surgical management of soft tissues and osseous defects, wound healing following periodontal surgical procedures, and the role of occlusion in periodontal therapy.
