COURSE SYLLABUS 1. TITLE OF COURSE: PERIODONTICS II PREFIX/NUMBER: DEH 242 CREDIT HOURS: 2 2. PREREQUISITE: Currently enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program 3. RESOURCES NEEDED: TEXT: SUPPLIES: To be provided by the Dental Hygiene Program 4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Continues to explore theoretical/clinical preparations with emphasis on dental hygiene process of care, treatment planning, non-surgical treatment, evaluation of treatment, and maintenance needs of the periodontal patient. Develops research and decision making skills with use of library and Internet resources relating to risk factors, etiologic agents, and treatment modalities. Includes comprehensive periodontal assessment, supplemental diagnostics, periodontal pharmacology, and evidence based treatment planning. 5. COURSE GOAL: To provide an introduction to operative dentistry techniques including manipulation of restorative materials, amalgam carvings of cavity preparations, and polishing of amalgam restorations. 6. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will be given a detailed list of course/instructional objectives on the first day of class. 7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES: Weekly Quizzes 30% Final Written Exam 30% Completed Restorations 40% Total 100% GRADING SCALE 93 - 100% A 85 - 92% B 77 - 84% C 69 - 76% D 0 - 68% F Special Remarks: A. Attendance: Will be required for all classes with more than two absences resulting in the lowering of the final grade by grade level. B. Tardy Policy: A student who is late three times (enters classroom after instruction begins) or leaves early (before instruction is over) will be charged with one full absence. Proper Attire: Lab coats worn over shirts, dresses or slacks and compliance with the program pre‑clinical dress code. 8. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity.
