1.         TITLE OF COURSE:              Community Dental Health I

           

            PREFIX/NUMBER:                 DEH  204                        CREDIT HOURS: 2       

 

2.         PREREQUISITES:                  Current Enrollment in Dental Hygiene Program

3.         RESOURCES NEEDED:        Geurink, Kathy Voigt.   Community Oral Health Practice for the 
                                                           Dental Hygienist, 3rd Edition, 2012.

 

4.       COURSE

          DESCRIPTION:                       Course provides instruction in the concepts, methods and issues of dental public health. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based criteria for effective promotion and prevention of dental disease in the public health setting. Concepts of dental health education and program planning in the community setting are reinforced through case based materials, including methods of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of effectiveness. Course activities will reinforce skills in speaking and writing effectively in preparation for the subsequent community dental health field experience course.

 

5.        COURSE GOAL:                     To provide background knowledge and skills in Dental Health Education techniques, public health issues, and program planning for community dental needs.  To reinforce skills in speaking and writing effectively for the subsequent community dental health field experience course.

 

6.       COURSE OBJECTIVES:        A detailed list of course objectives will be given at the beginning of 
                                                          the first class.

                           93 to 100      = A     

                           85 to 92        = B     

                           77 to 84        = C     

                           69 to 76        = D     

                           Below 69      = F

 

 SPECIAL REMARKS:

  

Attendance:       

Attendance is required in all dental hygiene classes (didactic, laboratory and clinic).  It is the student’s responsibility to arrive on time and be prepared for class.

 

The attendance policy of the Dental Hygiene Program will be the same as Pueblo Community Colleges' with the following additions:

 

§                Any absence must be reported to the program secretary by 8:00 a.m. Absences
    and tardies are tracked by the program secretary.

 

§                If any absence occurs during a scheduled test or examination, the student will
    receive an automatic 0. Only extenuating circumstances will be considered for
    make-up and must receive approval from the Department Chair.

 

§               Extended absences for emergency circumstances will be dealt with on an individual 
   basis.

 

§              More than two absences will result in the lowering of a full letter grade.

 

§             Three or more tardies are equal to one absence.

 

                  §  If 20 or more percent of a lecture or laboratory class is missed, the student will
                           receive a failing grade. 
 

 

                  §  Clinic time cannot be made up.

The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
