COURSE SYLLABUS

1.      TITLE OF COURSE:           Clinical Practice of Dental Hygiene I

         PREFIX/NUMBER:             DEH 170 CREDIT HOURS:       4.5 Semester Credits

2.      PREREQUISITES:               Current Enrollment in Dental Hygient Program

3.      RESOURCES NEEDED:

                         TEXT:                 ADA Chairside Instructor Booklet, American Dental Association 
                                                   
Mosby’s Dental Drug Book, Wilkins, Esther M., Clinical Practice of the 
                                                    Dental Hygienist, 10th 
Edition, Philadelphia, Lea & Febiger, 2010.

                        SUPPLIES:          The standard instrument and supply kit as issued first term, maintained in
                                                     usable condition. Uniform ‑ Only the standard uniform tops and pants as
                                                     approved and purchased in the group order may be worn.  Shoes, 
                                                     stockings, jewelry, safety eyeglasses, etc. should be worn according to
                                                     standards outlined in the clinic manual.  Only Dental Hygiene Program  
                                                     approved equipment may be used in the school dental
                                                     hygiene clinic.

4.       COURSE
          DESCRIPTION:                Provides clinical experience in patient skills assessment, instrumentation  
                                                    and additional preventative and prophylactic clinical procedures.

5.      COURSE GOAL:               Continue to exhibit professional behavior in attitude, actions, appearance
                                                    and personal hygiene; utilize patient assessment skills acquired in DEH  
                                                   102 to plan appropriate preventive and therapeutic dental hygiene services;
                                                   follow all infection control policies thereby promoting safety for the health  
                                                   of  the operator, patient, and faculty/staff; maintain and operate clinical  

                                                   equipment, keeping the clinical area in optimum operative condition;
                                                   describe and utilize the appropriate technique to maintain sharp, well-
                                                   shaped instruments; provide appropriate dental hygiene services to clinical
                                                   patients based on individual patient needs.

         OBJECTIVES:                    A detailed list of course descriptions will be give at the beginning of the 
                                                    first class.

Special Remarks: 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:     

Attendance is required in all dental hygiene classes (didactic, laboratory and clinic).  It is the student’s responsibility to arrive on time and be prepared for class.

 

The attendance policy of the Dental Hygiene Program will be the same as Pueblo Community Colleges' with the following additions:

 

                  §  Any absence must be reported to the program administrative assistant by 8:00 a.m. 
                     Absences and tardies are tracked by the administrative assistant.

§  If any absence occurs during a scheduled test or examination, the student will receive an automatic zero (0).

§  Extended absences for emergency circumstances will be dealt with on an individual basis.

§  More than two absences will result in the lowering of a full letter grade.

§  Three or more tardies are equal to one absence.

§  If 20 percent or more of a lecture or laboratory class is missed, the student will receive a failing grade.

§  Missed Clinics Cannot Be Made Up.


ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
