COURSE SYLLABUS

1.      TITLE OF COURSE:         Clinical Practice of Dental Hygiene I

         PREFIX/NUMBER:          DEH 170 CREDIT HOURS:       3 Semester Credits

2.      PREREQUISITES:            DEH 101, DEH 102

3.      RESOURCES NEEDED:

                         TEXT:                 ADA Chairside Instructor Booklet, American Dental Association
                                                     Mosby’s Dental Drug Book

                        SUPPLIES:         The standard instrument and supply kit as issued first term, maintained
                                                     in usable condition. Uniform - Only the standard uniform tops and pants
                                                     as approved and purchased in the group order may be worn. Shoes,
                                                     stockings, jewelry, safety eyeglasses, etc. should be worn according to
                                                     standards outlined in the clinic manual.
4.       COURSE
          DESCRIPTION:
              Provides clinical experience in patient skills assessment, instrumentation  
                                                    and additional preventative and prophylactic clinical procedures.

5.      COURSE GOAL:             To strengthen the role of the dental hygienist in the clinical practice of 
                                                    preventive dental hygiene through continued emphasis on instrumentation,
                                                    and the learning of additional clinical procedures. As designated clinical
                                                    proficiencies are achieved, students will gain further competence and
                                                    responsibility for completing and evaluating preventive and prophylactic
                                                    treatment.

Special Remarks:

Attendance Policy:      
Attendance is expected in all classes and is required in all dental hygiene
                                       classes (didactic, laboratory and clinic). It is the student’s responsibility 
                                       to arrive on time and be prepared for the class. The attendance policy
                                      of the Dental Hygiene Program will be the same as Pueblo Community
                                      College’s with the following additions:

                                             Any absence must be reported to the program secretary by 8:00 AM

                                             If any absence occurs during a scheduled test or examination, the
                                             student will be required to complete the said exercise within one
                                             week of the original date.  The makeup test must be scheduled
                                             with the course instructor.

                                             Extended absences for whatever reason will be dealt with on an
                                             individual basis.

                                             In the event of an absence, the student will be required to make up
                                             class time with an appropriate assignment as designated by the 
                                             course faculty. Clinic time cannot be made up.

Academic Integrity:


The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
