4.    COURSE
       DESCRIPTION:             Covers general pharmacology and reviews drugs that may influence the
                                              management of dental hygiene patients. Enables the student to develop
                                              sufficient knowledge of pharmacology to permit safe and effective
                                              medical evaluation of patients for dental hygiene treatment.

5.    COURSE GOAL:           The pharmacology curriculum includes a review of therapeutic agents
                                              that may influence the management of the dental hygiene patient.

       OBJECTIVES:               A detailed list of course objectives will be given at the beginning of 
                                             the first class.

Special Remarks:

Your case study consists of a patient’s medical history, medication list and special notes including chief complaint. You will be given an outline of routine dental hygiene procedures. Your assignment is to alter the dental hygiene therapy as needed to keep your patient safe. You may work in groups of three, or if you wish you may work alone. A grading rubric will be included with the case study.

Please note: Unit objectives are listed in the order they appear in the text book not how they are presented in class for easier reference.

* Cell phones are to be placed on vibrate only. Any disruption of class or instructor by ring tone or texting will result in a 1% reduction per occurrence from the professional practices category. If you are expecting an emergency call have your caller call Sandy at 549-3286 and she will immediately come in class and get you. No penalty will occur when an emergency call is received by Sandy

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance is required in all dental hygiene classes (didactic, laboratory and clinic).  It is the student’s responsibility to arrive on time and be prepared for class.

 The attendance policy of the Dental Hygiene Program will be the same as Pueblo Community Colleges' with the following additions:

 

 

§  Any absence must be reported to the program administrative assistant by 8:00 a.m.

   Absences and tardies are tracked by the administrative assistant.

§  If any absence occurs during a scheduled test or examination, the student will receive an automatic zero (0).

§  Extended absences for emergency circumstances will be dealt with on an individual basis.

§  More than two absences will result in the lowering of a full letter grade.

§  Three or more tardies are equal to one absence.

§  If 20 percent or more of a lecture or laboratory class is missed, the student will receive a failing grade.

§  Missed Clinics Cannot Be Made Up

 

8. COURSE OUTLINE:  A detailed course outline will be given at the beginning of the first class.

9. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the PCC Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
