COURSE SYLLABUS

1. TITLE OF COURSE: APPLIED PHARMACOLOGY

2. PREREQUISITE: Currently enrolled in Dental Hygiene Program at PCC

SUPPLIES:

 

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Covers general pharmacology and reviews drugs that may influence the management of dental hygiene patients. Enables the student to develop sufficient knowledge of pharmacology to permit safe and effective medical evaluation of patients for dental hygiene treatment.
5. COURSE GOAL:

The course in applied pharmacology will cover basic general pharmacology principles, but will stress the review of drugs that may influence the management of dental hygiene patients. The end point of this course is not to have the student prescribe medications.  The end point is to have the student develop the ability to safely and effectively evaluate the medical status of dental hygiene patients; in particular, how the patient’s medical condition and/ or medications will effect treatment.

6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  Students will be given a detailed list of course/instructional objectives on the first day of class.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
 

Written examinations covering units of academic instruction presented during the course (plus any unannounced quizzes and/or homework assignments) will constitute 75% of the final course grade.  A final examination will constitute 25% of the final course grade.

  *Attendance may be used to modify your final course grade.

Special Remarks:

A.

Attendance:  Will be required for all classes with more than two absences resulting in the lowering of the final grade by grade level.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after instruction begins) or leaves early (before instruction is over) will be charged with one full absence.

9. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
  The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity.
