COURSE SYLLABUS

 

 

1.         TITLE OF COURSE:              DENTAL MATERIALS LECTURE & LAB

            PREFIX/NUMBER:                 DEH 126 & 126L        CREDIT HOURS:       3

 

2.         PREREQUISITES:                  Currently enrolled in Dental Hygiene Program at PCC

 

3.         RESOURCES NEEDED:
 
            TEXT:                                     Gladwin, Marcia A., and Bagby, Michael D., Clinical Aspects of
                                                           Dental Materials, Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Second Edition 
                                                           2004.

            SUPPLIES:                             Plaster bowl, plaster spatula, lab knife, and disposable impression
                                                           trays for maxillary and mandibular dentition in at least four sizes.

4.           COURSE DESCRIPTION:    Provides the dental hygiene student with a sound knowledge of the
                                                          science of dental materials. Covers didactic and laboratory
                                                          experiencesand the physical properties, basic chemistry, and the
                                                          clinical applications of the materials used in the practice of dentistry.

 

5.         COURSE GOAL:                  This course is designed to provide the dental hygiene student with a
                                                          sound knowledge of the science of dental materials.  Both didactic and
                                                          laboratory experiences are provided which will familiarize the student 
                                                          with the physical properties, basic chemistry, and clinical applications
                                                          of the materials used in the practice of dentistry.

 

                                                          Emphasis is placed on why specific materials are used rather than

                                                          solely upon the techniques of manipulating materials. 

                                                         A primary objective of the course is to enhance the student's ability to
                                                         make clinical judgments regarding the application of dental materials
                                                         and the ways in which these materials react to the oral environment.

6.       COURSE OBJECTIVES:       A detailed course description will be given at the beginning of the first
                                                         class.

Special Remarks:                                             

All laboratory work must be completed in the laboratory area.  For example, study casts
cannot be taken out of the laboratory area without prior consent by a faculty member.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Attendance is required in all dental hygiene classes (didactic, laboratory and clinic). 
It is the student’s responsibility to arrive on time and be prepared for class.

 

The attendance policy of the Dental Hygiene Program will be the same as Pueblo Community
Colleges' with the following additions:

 

- Any absence must be reported to the program secretary by 8:00 a.m.

 

-  If any absence occurs during a scheduled test or examination, the student will be required
   to complete 
the said exercise within one week of the original date.  The make-up test must
   be scheduled with the course instructor.

             

-  Extended absences for whatever reason will be dealt with on an individual basis.

 

-   In the event of an absence, the student will be required to make up class time
with an appropriate assignment as designated by the course faculty.  
 

8.        COURSE OUTLINE:  A detailed course outline will be given at the beginning of the first class.

          

9.         METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

            To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, active learning, 
            and lecture. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.

 

10.      ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

            The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of
            academic integrity.  Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic
            conduct as described in the PCC Student Handbook.  Violation of academic integrity may be
            defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of
            academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation.  It
            is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. 
           Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation,
           suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
