4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduces the principles of periodontics. Focuses on recognition of the tissues in health and disease, macro and microanatomy of the periodontium, and histopathology of periodontal diseases and other related gingival conditions. Provides the theory and discussion of periodontal assessment, etiology, epidemiology, inflammatory process/immune response, and the AAP classification system.
5. COURSE GOAL:

To educate the dental hygiene student of the anatomy and physiology of the normal periodontium (the tissues which surround and support the tooth) therefore providing the background for continuing study of the periodontium during the disease process.  Clinical manifestations and treatment for pathological conditions will be studied.  The student will have a basic knowledge of patient assessment skills, formulating prognoses and developing treatment plans.

  Students will be given a detailed list of course/instructional objectives on the first day of class.

    One Minute Papers on Reading Assignments 10%

Special Remarks:

A.

Attendance:  Will be required for all classes with more than two absences resulting in the lowering of the final grade by grade level.

B.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after instruction begins) will be charged with one full absence.

C.

Assignments:   Required Reading Reading assignments indicated are contained within the required textbooks.  If there is no reading assignment for the session, supplemental information will be provided by the instructor.  Please read assignments prior to class for better understanding of course materials.  A one-minute paper on assigned reading will be due at the beginning of each class session.

9. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
  To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, hand in one-minute papers, complete assignment, and readings.  The instructor has assigned point values to each activity.
10. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
