1. TITLE OF COURSE: Dental and Medical Emergencies

2. PREREQUISITES: Enrolled in Dental Hygiene Program at PCC
3. RESOURCES NEEDED:
TEXT: Malamed, Stanley F., Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office, 6th. Ed.,
St. Louis, Elsevier, 2008.
SUPPLIES: Notebook, pen and/or pencil, medical dictionary
4. COURSE GOAL: This course is designed to provide instruction in the prevention,
recognition, and management of medical emergencies. This instruction
should be sufficient to permit the student to acquire the skills necessary to
develop an orderly and confident approach to the diagnosis and
supportive care of an acutely ill person whose life is endangered.
5. COURSE
DESCRIPTION: Introduces the management of emergency situations in the dental
office setting. Emphasizes reduction of risk for emergencies, identification
and management of anxiety, and stress recognition protocol. Provides
practical skills applicable to dental hygienists and the scope of responsibility
for medical emergency management as dictated by state dental practice
law.Covers the basic categories of emergencies, causes and
management. Includes content and use of emergency kits and oxygen
support systems.
6. COURSE
OBJECTIVES: A detailed list of course objectives will be given at the beginning of the
first day of class.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
Written examinations, quizzes, and homework assignments covering units of academic instruction presented during the course will constitute 80% of the final course grade. A final examination will comprise 20% of the final course grade.

Special Remarks:
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance is required in all dental hygiene classes (didactic, laboratory and clinic). It is the student’s responsibility to arrive on time and be prepared for class.
The attendance policy of the Dental Hygiene Program will be the same as Pueblo Community Colleges' with the following additions:
§ Any absence must be reported to the program administrative assistant by 8:00 a.m.
Absences and tardies are tracked by the administrative assistant.
§ If any absence occurs during a scheduled test or examination, the student will receive an automatic zero (0).
§ Extended absences for emergency circumstances will be dealt with on an individual basis.
§ More than two absences will result in the lowering of a full letter grade.
§ Three or more tardies are equal to one absence.
§ If 20 percent or more of a lecture or laboratory class is missed, the student will receive a failing grade.
§ Missed Clinics Cannot Be Made Up.
9. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, oral presentations, in-class writing, case based learning, active learning, collaborative learning, lecture, and utilizing technology. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
