1.         TITLE OF COURSE:          Pre‑Clinical Dental Hygiene Care

            PREFIX/NUMBER:             DEH 102            CREDIT HOURS:  3 Semester Credits

 

2.         PREREQUISITES:              Admission to the Dental Hygiene Program

4.         COURSE

            DESCRIPTION:       Focuses on clinical experiences in basic dental hygiene procedures and techniques including basic instrumentation, infection control, and patient assessment skills. Students participate in a variety of clinical learning experiences.

 

5.         COURSE GOAL:     Exhibit professional behavior in attitude, actions, appearance and personal
                                              hygiene.  Utilize efficient and effective operator/patient body mechanics to
                                              promote maximum operator visibility and patient accessibility. Follow proper
                                              infection control policies in all patient treatments to promote operator, patient
                                              and faculty/staff safety.  Obtain dental/medical histories and accurate vital sign
                                              measurements to plan therapeutic services.  Perform an extra/intra oral exam
                                              utilizing proper technique and sequence to identify, describe and record
                                              deviations from the normal clinical features of the head, neck and oral cavity. 
                                              Utilize and demonstrate correct instrumentation techniques for the hard and
                                              soft tissue dental exam and accurately records all findings.  Perform and
                                              accurately record the periodontal assessment to include gingival description,
                                              perio probing, bleeding points and gingival margins.

 

6.         COURSE OBJECTIVES: A detailed list of course objectives will be given at the beginning

                                                       of  the first class.

 

7.         GRADING CRITERIA:

 

GRADING SCALE

 

            93‑100 = A

            85‑ 92 = B

            77‑ 84 = C

            69‑ 76 = D

            68‑ or below = F

DEH 102 Preclinical Dental Hygiene Care is a fundamental basic skills course necessary for successful progression in the Dental Hygiene Program. Therefore, any student earning a “D” or “F” in DEH 102 Preclinical Dental Hygiene Care will be dismissed from the program.

  

Attendance:   

Attendance is required in all dental hygiene classes (didactic, laboratory and clinic).  It is the student’s responsibility to arrive on time and be prepared for class.

 

The attendance policy of the Dental Hygiene Program will be the same as Pueblo Community Colleges' with the following additions:

 

 

§  Any absence must be reported to the program administrative assistant by 8:00 a.m.

   Absences and tardies are tracked by the administrative assistant.

§  If any absence occurs during a scheduled test or examination, the student will receive an automatic zero (0).

§  Extended absences for emergency circumstances will be dealt with on an individual basis.

§  More than two absences will result in the lowering of a full letter grade.

§  Three or more tardies are equal to one absence.

§  If 20 percent or more of a lecture or laboratory class is missed, the student will receive a failing grade.

§  Missed Clinics Cannot Be Made Up

           

Academic Integrity:

                                   

The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity.  Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook.  Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following:  cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation.  It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty.  Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
