COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Includes techniques for taking and reading vital signs as well as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Health Care Providers.  Emphasizes recognition, prevention, and management of medical emergency situations in the dental office.  Covers completing and updating patient health history.  Addresses minor pharmacology.

COURSE GOAL:

 

To introduce the student to emergencies occurring in a dental office.  It will include etiology, prognosis and protocols, treatment of diseases and other pathological conditions, as well as pharmacology aspects in treatment.  Emphasis will be placed on dental emergency simulation utilizing the Human Patient Simulator.

This course carries two credits for a total of 45 contact hours.

Transferability of credit depends on the institution to which the student plans to transfer.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of this unit the student should be able to:

A.

Identify medical conditions or health changes that may affect a patient’s dental treatment.

B.

Explain and demonstrate the management of common dental emergencies.

C.

Identify and describe various medical emergencies that can occur in the dental office.

D.

Describe and identify the appropriate emergency equipment for a dental office.

E.

Identify the supplies found in a dental office emergency kit and state the purpose of each.

F.

 

Describe and demonstrate methods of completing and updating the patient’s health history.

G.

 

List and describe the three essential elements of a complete diagnosis and treatment plan.

H.

 

Review and demonstrate recording medical and dental histories in a clinical examination of the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity, face and neck.

I.

Describe the chain of command in a dental emergency.

J.

Identify and demonstrate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques.

K.

Identify and demonstrate the techniques for taking, reading and recording the patient’s vital signs.

L.

Identify and describe the various drugs used in the management of medical emergencies

M.

N.

Explain and identify hemorrhaging and hemostatic drugs.

Demonstrate mock/simulated case studies and/or select dental/medical emergencies on Human Patient Simulator

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

35%

Will be based on the scores received on assignments, worksheets, reports, unit tests and quizzes.

20%

Will be based on student’s attendance and tardiness (3 pts per session = 45 pts. per semester), clinic team rotation participation (5 pts per session = 75 pts per semester), and professional behavior/ work ethic (See Student Handbook - ex. respectable, team player, responsible patient care, dependable, etc.).  3 tardy equate to 1 absence.

Will be based on the scores received by the student on the midterm and final examination.

Will be based on the score received by the student on skills performed based on the rating scale value of the Proficiency Task Sheets.

Special Remarks:

 

A.

If a student is absent on a schedule examination day the student must call with reason for absence prior to examination and make arrangements with the instructor to make up the exam within one week. Failure to take a scheduled examination at the appointed time without prior arrangement with the instructor will result in a 2-5 point reduction in the score of any make-up examination. Students of the Dental Assisting Program are allowed to make up three (3) tests per semester to the above guidelines, any test made up after three receives an automatic 10 point deduction.

 

B.

Pueblo Community College Dental Assisting Program will adhere to the Academic Dishonesty Policy, which is stated in your DA Student Handbook, for any and all acts of cheating, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty and plagiarism.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

 

The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
