COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course includes a survey of human anatomy and physiology, the structure of the head and neck as applied to dental assisting.  The function of the maxilla and mandible, processes, foramen, sutures, and major blood and nerve supply.

COURSE GOAL:

 

 

This course meets the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation Standards for the biomedical science content.  This course provides dental assisting students with coursework in anatomy, and physiology, stressing head and neck anatomy.  Emphasis is placed on the relationships of these areas to the dental patient and dental operative procedures.  This course is required for certificate completion of the Dental Assisting Program.

This course carries three credit hours for a total of 45 contact hours.

Transferability of credit depends on the institution to which the student plans to transfer.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

 

70%

The student’s grade will be based on the scores received on unit test.  50% is applied to exams and 20% to assignments and task proficiencies.

 

10%

Will be based on the score received by the student on the final examination.

 

20%

The student’s grade will be based on the instructor’s evaluation of the student’s attendance pattern, demonstration of a professional attitude, and participation in class/laboratory and activities/discussions.  Points are issued per criteria to the hours of attendance.

Attendance: Due to the content material that will be covered in this special length course one-hundred percent attendance is expected with more than two absences resulting in the lowering of the final grade by one grade level.

Tardy Policy:  a student who is late three times (enters the classroom after instruction begins) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

 

 

At the completion of the course the student should be able to do all the basic dental assistant functions required for successful completion of the program.  These competencies will be evidenced by the successful completion of 75% of the tasks in each unit.

Special Remarks:

 

 

A.

If a student is absent on a schedule examination day the student must call with reason for absence prior to examination and make arrangements with the instructor to make up the exam within one week.  Failure to take a scheduled examination at the appointed time without prior arrangement with the instructor will result in an automatic 10 point reduction in the score of any make-up examination.  It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor for a scheduled make up time.  If the exam is not made up within one week the student will receive a zero score or “F” grade and failure of examination.

Pueblo Community College Dental Assisting Program will adhere to the Academic Dishonesty Policy, which is stated in your DA Student Handbook, for any and all acts of cheating, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty and plagiarism.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

 

The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
