COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Includes the opportunity for clinical application of dental assisting techniques in a dental office or clinical setting as part of the American Dental Association’s requirement of 300 clinical internship hours.

 

 

 

5.

COURSE GOAL:

 

 

 

 

To allow the dental assisting student an introduction in a clinical setting to experience the practice of dentistry.  Emphasis of study is focused to becoming proficient in infection control skills and procedure applications, interpersonal skills and basic patient management skills, basic dental material application, procedure set-ups, and basic radiography techniques.  Exposure and observation of dental procedures will enhance student learning during pre-clinical course work.

 

 

 

 

Transferability of credit depends on the institution to which the student plans to transfer.

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES:

 

 

 

 

At the completion of this unit the student should be able to:

 

 

 

 

A.

Dress in a professional manner by following program guidelines.

 

 

 

 

B.

Act in a professional and ethical manner according to the Dental Assisting Principles of Ethics.

 

 

 

 

C.

Work as a team member utilizing educational opportunities in the dental office.

 

 

 

 

D.

Perform clinical duties in a professional manner as taught in the dental assisting program and according to the Dental Assisting Principles of Ethics.

 

 

 

 

E.

Demonstrate proper use of dental terminology when speaking to dental office personnel and patients and when writing reports.

 

 

 

 

F.

Use effective communication and interpersonal skills as taught in the dental assisting program.

 

 

 

 

G.

Attend the clinical work assignment during all scheduled hours.

 

 

 

 

H.

Complete the required 30 hours in the clinical work assignment rotations and 15 hours of seminar or campus clinical practice in DEA 18 1.

 

 

 

 

I.

Complete all assignments made by the instructor including the student internship report and student notebook (daily journal).

 

 

 

 

J.

Turn in all assignments and time sheets on time.

 

 

 

 

K.

Attend scheduled campus clinical work experience progress seminars.

 

 

 

 

L.

Show initiative and use effective learning techniques, problem solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills.  

 

 

M.

Demonstrate knowledge and skills of basic dental procedures, materials, instruments and equipment.

 

 

N.

Demonstrate self-esteem in assessing self accurately as a professional to staff and patients.

 

 

O.

Demonstrate self-management of educational responsibilities.

 

 

P.

Demonstrate progressive levels of performance in overall dental assisting knowledge and chairside skills.

 

 

R.

Demonstrate proficiency for all clinical skills: radiographs (exposure, processing and mounting), infection control procedures, personal appearance, charting, impression taking, model pouring, housekeeping skills, ethical behaviors, professional behaviors, cement mixing, oral evacuation, seating and dismissing patients, etc.

 

 

7.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

 

 

 

 

 

10%

The students’ grade will be based on the scores received on journals, unit tests, quizzes, worksheets and assignments.

 

 

 

 

 

40%

The students’ grade will be based on skill competencies (critical objectives) achieved based on the rating scale of DEA 181 or DEA 182 Clinical Internship Evaluations.

 

 

 

 

30%

The student’s grade will be based on the instructor’s and clinical staff evaluation of the student’s attendance pattern, demonstration of a professional behaviors and participation in clinical internship experience.

 

 

 

 

20%

Will be based on student’s attendance and tardiness (3 pts per session = 45 pts. per semester), clinic team rotation participation (5 pts per session = 75 pts per semester), and professional behavior/ work ethic (See Student Handbook - ex. respectable, team player, responsible patient care, dependable, etc.).  3 tardy equate to 1 absence.

Special Remarks:

A.  Assignments: It is the student’s responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all

material presented and to complete all course assignments.  To receive full credit, all work must be submitted on time, this includes timesheets of clinical internship.  Late work will receive one grade cut for each day beyond the due date of the assignment. 

An assignment will not be accepted a week past the date and a score of “0” will be given.  Late homework assignments will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made.
